Positively Weightless

A healthy life not only means physically healthy, but mentally as well. Healthy eating, healthy exercising habits, and a positive attitude are all important and help maintain balance in life. I decided to combine my love of writing and my positivity to change the world in hopes that any reader can also become positively weightless, and lead them to a healthy life.

Thanksgiving 2019 is just a few days away! I am sure most of you are getting ready this weekend. Whether you do the entire meal for your family like my mom and niece and I do or maybe you just bring a side there is a lot of preparation that go into the holiday. From shopping to cooking to cleaning and all that comes with any holiday in your family I think it is safe to say it is pretty busy. But with all the hustle and bustle that comes with that do you remember the true reason for this holiday? Are you remembering to think about what you are thankful for? I wanted to keep my tradition of dedicating a post to remember the things I am thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Since I have been doing this for a few years now I think it is safe to say I have made my thankful posts a tradition. That is the perfect segue into the first thing I want to say I am thankful for: Traditions. My family honestly has a ton of them specially around the holidays. Sure, as my sister and I got older some of them fell away or even just changed as our family grew but they are still very much there. Once the Fall hits we are pretty much busy until the new year. One of my favorite newer traditions is Thanksgiving eve. My niece for the last few years sleeps over and helps my mom, and I make the Thanksgiving meal. Usually that even means she gets up early to put the turkey in the oven. I think all three of us love this tradition pretty equally. Another I love is apple picking in October, Christmas mornings, and even spending some time together on New Year's Eve (which happens to also be my birthday) with little party snacks and board games. I could honestly write an entire post about our traditions alone, but I will sum it up. I am very thankful that even as our family has grown and things have changed we still have a good number of our traditions still going.

You can't really have traditions without the people in your life though can you? I say this one every year, but that is because it always still stands. I am very lucky to have such wonderful people in my life, and I will never take that for granted. To mention the obvious first, I am very thankful for my family. I am very much aware how blessed I am to have the family I do because some are not as lucky. Sure like any family we have fights and disagreements and get under each other's skin, but we always come together when we need to. I also have some really great friends in my life. I know I can always count on them when I need someone to talk to and that absolutely goes both ways. I know I don't need to say who you are. If you are reading this, you know! There is one more category of people I need to mention too. I have been mentioning for months now how work has been crazy for me. This week my bosses showed me just how appreciative they are of me. It is honestly so nice to know I am working for two people that don't just treat me like their employee. We had a conversation about making things work better and even talked about ways to help me out even more. They and their families have always shown me their appreciation, and I know not all people are that lucky. I genuinely feel like I have such great people in my life and wouldn't trade them for anything.

The last thing I wanted to mention was how thankful I am for progress. Progress no matter how big or small is still progress. Every year in some way I grow, and this year was no different. Sure work has been stressful, but I haven't been letting it get to me to the extent that I'm getting sick. A few years ago I would have. I have found better ways to deal with my stress. I have made a ton of progress in the gym even if my weight has been pretty stagnant lately. I didn't even know what a deadlift was two years ago now look at me go! I have gained a good number of views and followers on my blog here as well and I am incredibly thankful for that. Writing is as you know something I love to do so to be able to keep that going is such a blessing for me. I even expanded my writing quite a bit this year too! Progress to me, even if it just means progressing through one day onto the other, is so important and I am so thankful for it. Do you want to know why? Because it means I am alive and still moving forward. It means I am still living life and even when things are difficult I get through it. I am thankful to be living each and every day.

I am incredibly blessed and I know it. I could honestly make this post about three times longer than I usually write because of this. I know some are not as lucky, and everyone's struggles are different from your own. No matter where you are in life I am sure there is something you can be thankful for. Maybe it is that one person in your life that is just very special and you appreciate more than anything. Maybe you just got a new job or promotion. Maybe it is your dog or cat that shows you nothing but unconditional love. If you are reading this, it means you have access to the internet and likely a roof over your head. That in itself is something to be thankful for as some do not even have that. Count your blessings and appreciate them this holiday. I hope you all have a lovely holiday if you celebrate, and as I mentioned last week, enjoy yourself!

Last week I took a much needed break. It wasn't that I needed to take a break from writing or this page, I just needed a break in general. A day to just basically do nothing. Work is still pretty busy right now and I have been pretty much working, going to the gym, shower, dinner then sleeping and repeat every day for the past few months. The holidays are a big deal in our family so even on the weekends there has been a lot going on since September. Now that I mention the holidays, if you are American you'll know one of the biggest holidays that can hurt our healthy lifestyles is coming up. It doesn't really need to be this way, though. I figured just before thanksgiving would be a good time to revisit the topic of food and relationships with food on my page.

Overall I think food is the downfall of so many people's lifestyles if you are in a high weight range or just overall not meeting your goals. I am by no means saying food is the enemy. I think looking at food as an enemy is an incredibly toxic way to look at things that can potentially lead to bigger problems. I know for me though that if I had better eating habits I would be so much closer to my goals. Overall my lifestyle is pretty healthy with the exercising and meal prepping I do, but on the weekends a lot of the time are my downfall. I was just talking to my mom this morning actually about the fact that I would have a killer body at this point with all the weight training I do if I simply had a bit cleaner of a diet right now. Now, I am not saying I just go crazy and eat a whole cake in one sitting, or something, but I could make better choices especially on weekends. With all that being said, if you have a similar struggle as me I still don't want you to look at food as an enemy. The only enemy in that struggle is yourself. Only you are holding yourself back from your goals this way.

So let's fast-forward a bit here. If you are someone like me that is still working toward a better relationship with food I want you to picture yourself at the Thanksgiving table. What is your first thought? I think most people would say that they go into panic mode. How many calories are in this? Oh my gosh how much weight is this going to make me gain? Is there any low-calorie options here? I want you to forget all that. I have said it multiple times (probably every year right around this time) but it is one day. Whatever you do, do not deprive yourself. It is a holiday and you should enjoy yourself! You've worked pretty hard all year whether you are a parent taking care of little ones, working extra hard at work or have more than usual going on like me at work, if you are a writer and have been working on a novel or poetry, anything really. We are all working hard and deserve to spend the holidays with no responsibilities attached.

Sure you may gain a little weight, but chances are that's a lot of water weight and bloating due to the sodium you consume. One day sure can cause a little bump in the road but its a small one. Step over it and keep going. Maybe wake up early and go to the gym the Friday after. Maybe just make more conscious choices the next day. Instead of taking leftovers and going crazy again take the turkey and veggies and skip the carbs and gravy. Maybe just have a small sliver of pumpkin pie for dessert instead of the large one you had on the holiday and maybe skip the mountain of whipped cream we all know you put on it! 😉

I know I kind of sound like a broken record here. Encouraging you all to enjoy yourselves for special occasions and holidays is something as I mentioned before, is something I always say. That is because I truly just stand by that. Sure maybe you go into the new year with a few extra pounds on you. Is that really a huge crisis? If you have been doing everything you should be routinely as much as possible then you will recover from this. You need to look at the bigger picture. I am betting if you look at a beautiful hand sewn quilt it looks flawless on the outside. If you look a lot closer, you may find a stitch that is less than perfect or even missed. Do you see that stitch when admiring the quilt as a whole? No. These small battles are only small stops along the way. So enjoy that thanksgiving dinner and more importantly enjoy the time with your loved ones. Focus on the conversations and stories at the dinner table, not the calories. Focus on the love around you. I promise you'll get right back to where you need to be afterwards.

Life is unpredictable. I think we all can think of times in our lives that have just been dropped on us that we are unprepared for. Maybe it is a problem with your car that leads to an expensive repair. Another example would be the loss of a job. I am pretty sure we have all had this happen at least once or twice. Of course there is absolutely nothing we can do to prepare for these events head on except possibly having small precautions in place (such as an emergency savings fund). What about the things we can prepare for? A lot of our lives can be predictable if we take a little time to prepare for them. Today I wanted to talk about just that.

Let's talk about the most present topic in my page here, our health. I know there are a lot of things to do with our health that really there is no set prevention for. I would say there are for more that can be prevented. I am no doctor of course so do not take any of this as medical advice. I would say the biggest example I can think of is one I have personally. I am very overweight as you all know. Despite my weight I am actually very healthy. I have great endurance at the gym. My blood pressure is at a decent range as well. I check my blood sugar levels and they are normal as well. Being at the weight I am, however, is like playing with fire. My family as a pretty prominent history of diabetes. Just because I am healthy now, does not mean I am going to stay that way. I do have the power to try and prevent diabetes. That is exactly why I continue to work on my health. I am not perfect as I have also said many times, but I want to encourage you to prevent as many health issues that you have the power to as well.

To go off of my introduction to this post a bit, what about financial situations? While no, you cannot always be fully prepared for things that will suddenly come up, you can do your best to try. An emergency fund is a great way to go or even just making sure your bank account always has over a certain amount. That way if you do have a sudden expense pop up you wont be eating ramen noodles for the next 6 weeks while your bank account replenishes. I personally have been working hard to prepare myself to finally move into my own place in the spring. Could I have moved out before then? Yes, but I wanted to make sure I was not only prepared with the furniture and household items, but with a good amount of money saved up as well. It truly never hurts to set aside some funds for yourself just for that extra security.

There are, of course, plenty of examples of ways you can prepare yourself in life but I also want to suggest that is not the only thing you ever focus on. Just because I am doing my best to save my money and buy things, I only need at this point does not mean I do not stray from that sometimes. Just this week I was debating getting a fully makeup collection from the crazy collection that dropped on Friday (if you know anything about me at this point, you'll know exactly what makeup I mean 😉). I was talking to my friend (shameless shoutout to Nicole) and she said I had been doing so well with saving and preparing to move out that I should treat myself. I didn't end up getting it all, but instead I treated myself to more than I planned on, and I don't feel guilty about it. Treat yourself as well just remember it is a treat, not an entire dessert buffet. Here and there is fine, but if you do it too often it takes away from your goals. The same can be said with diet and exercise as well as I always say. Stray for a bit if you need but get right back on track as soon as possible.

Overall I think it is incredibly smart to prepare for everything we can in life. I know I personally find anything unpredictable incredibly stressful. So why not plan ahead? Put some money aside for specific plans. Start taking a multivitamin and drinking a lot more water than you usually do. Go to the gym an extra day than you are going right now. The most predictable thing about life is that it is highly unpredictable, and these sorts of preparations will only make sure you pave a bit better of a path when the road you are walking on starts to get rocky. If you decide to start putting things into place now for a smoother life in the future, you will absolutely thank yourself for it.
