Positively Weightless

A healthy life not only means physically healthy, but mentally as well. Healthy eating, healthy exercising habits, and a positive attitude are all important and help maintain balance in life. I decided to combine my love of writing and my positivity to change the world in hopes that any reader can also become positively weightless, and lead them to a healthy life.

I mentioned in my Whole30 post last week that being prepared is very important to have success on the program. As someone that has been meal prepping for years now, I have known how good of a tool preparing can be. Especially when trying to change your lifestyle. Not everybody is in the habit of doing so. I think I can offer up some advice to show just how important being prepared for the week ahead of you is.

The obvious place to start would be meal/food prep for your week. I personally prep my food on Sundays as I know many people do. Before I started Whole30 I really only prepped my lunches in advance and just had an idea of what breakfasts and dinner would be for the week. When I started Whole30 I realized with the schedule I am on I would need to prep other foods prior to the week as well. Trust me by the time I get home from work and the gym I certainly do not have the time or patience to roast sweet potatoes in the oven. I am making detailed meal plans for my next week as well as a grocery list of the ingredients I need to pick up. I've stopped at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's on my drive home from work on Fridays to get the food I need. I am cooking my lunches on Sundays and prepping what I need for my other meals during the week as well. If you keep yourself as organized as possible with food and as prepped as possible you are setting yourself up to meet your goals. I know I am more likely to stick to a healthy meal if it is readily available for me.

As silly as this is going to sound I also keep myself on a schedule with my water consumption. I try to drink either a can of sparkling water or just a plain bottle of water during my drive to work. Then I try to drink two of my 20oz bottles at work before lunch. Another 20oz bottle should be done by my 3:00pm snack, and then one final 20oz bottle before I leave and head to the gym at 5:30pm. Luckily I have access to filtered water at work that I can just refill my bottle with. That certainly helps a lot. If you are someone that struggles to get your daily water in, I highly suggest coming up with a similar strategy.

Working out without a doubt should be planned ahead as well. I set out to go to the gym Monday thru Thursday. Sure, things come up and this isn't always the case, but the majority of the time I stick to this. I also plan out what I am going to do each day as well. Yes, I have had some help from my trainer with this. He has a structured workout plan for me that I can just follow. At this point it is just a habit for me to head right to the gym after work Monday thru Thursdays. I also make sure my gym bag is packed up with clean clothes and ready to go every night prior to working out. This way it is all ready to go and I can just grab it and leave in the morning. Trust me if you are anything like me you will not remember to pack it in the morning if you wait.

Overall I wanted to mention just how much you can set yourself up for success by planning ahead. If you dedicate one day to make sure you are ready for the coming week, you will absolutely thank yourself later! Everyone is different of course, but I know I am that much more likely to succeed if I do this. Sure it is a big chore at first, but I am to the point now where it is just party of my weekend routine. Sundays (with some exceptions) are the days I dedicate to meal prep and laundry and that in turn helps me face the week ahead. Well and blogging of course as you all know! I have my soup all ready to go for next week's lunches and my laundry is in the basket ready to go to the basement. Trust me I get that you are busy, but in the long run this is only going to make you less busy during the week.

This past Monday was my first day of Whole30. Some of you may know what that is, others may not, so let me give a very basic description. Whole30 is a 30 day program designed to essentially reset your relationship with food. No dairy, grains, legumes, and most importantly no sugar. Those are just the basics, there are other rules in the program, but I will let you explore those on your own if you are interested. Today is day 7 for me, and figured why not share my thoughts and experiences for the first full week on the program.

The most shocking part of this week to me has been how much I have already learned about food. One major rule on this program is no added sugar or sweeteners of any kind. Really the only source of sugar you are allowed is anything that is naturally sweet. Let me tell you this makes grocery shopping incredibly difficult and time consuming. There is added sugar in so many things! I honestly thought this would be a fairly easy rule to follow. I was completely wrong. Chicken sausage, pasta sauce, salsa, even bacon all have added sugars in them! I could honestly dedicate an entire post writing out a list of items I found with added sugars. I spent twice as long as normal grocery shopping on this program from checking all the labels. Sure I used to check the calorie content and such on labels before, but the ingredient list didn't really concern me that much. Lesson learned.

I want to spend some time talking about how I felt this week as well. The first few days I honestly felt fine. I was eating fairly healthy before I started this, so it wasn't a huge shock to my system... then Wednesday hit. On Wednesday I started feeling tired, a bit achy, and honestly just all around crabby. We all have off days so I didn't think too much about it. The aches I figured were just sore muscles from my weight training the day before. Thursday rolled around and I felt the same way. Aches, fatigue, and I was irritable once again. I went to my personal training session and let him know that I was feeling off. Although it was still a good workout, it wasn't quite as intense as I am used to. I was suppose to have a second session on Friday, but we decided to cancel as we both figured it would be better to not push it. Friday was much better, but I still felt tired and I had a slight headache. Then midday Saturday came and it was like an internal switch was flipped. Suddenly I felt way better and had my energy back. As soon as that happened I knew I was experiencing sugar withdrawal type symptoms. I was completely unaware of how much added sugar was in the food I ate, so my body more or less had a constant supply of sugar. I suddenly did a full turnaround cutting it completely and my body was angry with me. I have watched plenty of videos and read many blogs on Whole30, and it seems this is fairly common in the first week. It is honestly pretty scary to think how dependent my body was on that constant stream of sugar.

One other major thing I noticed about myself starting this program is my willpower. It is a lot stronger than I thought. My boss's wife stopped into the office this week and surprised me with coffee and a cookie. I passed on the cookie (although I told her how thankful I was of course) and although she brought me sugar for the coffee, I drank it black. I never would have dreamed of drinking black coffee before this and I honestly didn't hate it! To know there was a tasty chocolate chip cookie all for me and not eat it was a big step as well. Sweets are my downfall (clearly from the symptoms I was having). I learned that when I put my mind to it, I can stick to what I want. Big positive there!

I only provided a very basic summary of the program, there are a lot more rules that I didn't mention. I personally decided to skip the no weighing yourself rule as I like to be able to report to my trainer weekly. I did, however, take all my measurements the day before I started. This way the end result with be a non scale victory as well. They also ask that you try not to snack too often. The eating schedule I am on now, including snacks between meals, is working for me. I did not want to change the schedule I have in place. I am following most of the rules, but bending a few as well. This is only to mention a few.

Day one's breakfast of eggs, sweet potatoes, spinach, and
chicken sausage. Whole30 Day by Day by Melissa
Hartwig, a daily guide.
My biggest piece of advice if you are interested in Whole30 is to do your research. Make sure you know of all the rules not just the ones I mentioned. There are a ton of resources online, just google it! Make sure you have plenty of tools to reference along the way as well. I bought myself a cookbook (review in the future?) and a day by day handbook to guide me in this process. I also made sure I had plenty of meal ideas and recipes on top of the cookbook on hand. Trust me your food choices are limited on this plan, but there are so many recipes and ideas out there to prevent you from getting bored. Ask around and see if you know anyone on or who has done the program as well. The more information and resources you have going into this the better! Make sure you do your prep as well! If you are someone who is not a planner and a grab and go type, do not do this program. Meal prep is essential to be successful.

I do not plan to post about this weekly, but I will be sure to share my overall thoughts when I have completed it. I am taking things one day at a time and listening to my body closely along the way as well. 7 days are down... here is to 23 more!

To be completely honest, I almost forgot to write today. Something so habitual for me and I still almost forgot. I would say the reason for that would be because I have been experiencing a bit of writer's block. I feel that a lot of the topics are repeats of previous posts. In most cases that is perfectly fine. Ideas and thoughts evolve overtime, so of course my new take on an old topic would be fresh. To be quite frank I have been just a bit frustrated with my lack of ideas. Today when I remembered I needed to write, I figured why not talk about just that. Why not use my current feelings and share them with you.

Frustration can come in many forms. You can be frustrated with your personal life, friends, work, etc. We all experience it. We all have things in our lives that build frustration. That is a very good sign. If you are experiencing frustration about something, it only means that you care or are passionate about it. If I didn't love to write this blog, a lack of ideas wouldn't bother me too much. If I wasn't passionate about it I would simply not write every week. The frustration stems from my desire to write. Think about what may be causing your frustration at the moment and really think about why it is causing you to feel this way.

People in our lives can really frustrate us as well. I know I have had people I love act out in certain ways that lead me to feel an incredible amount of frustration. The best option is to talk to them about it. Do not let it sit and stew. Unaddressed feelings like that only build up until an explosion. Talk to the person causing frustration in your life. We will never be able to truly know what is going on in someone else's head, so sharing your thoughts may help open that door. I can think of a number of people that have caused me frustration in my life. They all have one thing in common. I care about them. If I didn't, their behavior would not bother me to that point. Take that as a sign of needing to work out your differences. Do not lose someone because of a lack of communication.

As I am typing these words more general causes of frustration are coming to mind. I am not going to type out a list. I do encourage you to write out a list for yourself. Take some time and list all of the causes of frustration in your life. Think about why they are causing this emotion. Think about how this can be fixed. Maybe you are feeling underappreciated at work. Make the decision to talk to someone about it. If that is not an option, maybe it is about time you start looking elsewhere. Maybe a friend is treating you poorly or taking advantage of you. You should mention your feelings to them and talk things through. Think of all the possible solutions to your list of frustrations. Unfortunately sometimes the best solution is to completely distance yourself from the situation. An extremely difficult thing to do, but essential if there is no other option.

Frustration is going to lead to stress and we all know how bad stress is for us. As someone who used to deal with stress poorly, I know how important getting rid of it is. Going through life frustrated and stressed out is simply existing. We do not truly live until we say goodbye to these toxic emotions. Nobody can cut these out completely. It is important, however, to try and distance ourselves as much as possible. When they do pop into our lives we then know exactly how to get past them. I was feeling frustrated with my lack of creativity. What do you know here we are at the end of another post. I guess I didn't have a very big case of writer's block after all!

I have been working on a healthier me this time around since January. Through this journey I have learned a lot of things about myself and about the things I have been doing along the way. To backtrack a bit, the first time I lost a bunch of weight and back when I first started this blog I really only needed to do a few things to lose weight. I watched what I ate and counted my calories and I did cardio a few times a week. I think the hardest part of my journey this time around was realizing that I couldn't just jump right into the exact same thing I was doing back then. I think adapting and changing your routine as necessary is extremely important when trying to lose weight and/or trying to live a healthy life.

When I first started out on my journey this time around I jumped right in basically doing exactly what I was doing before--counting calories and cardio at the gym. I did see results from this at first, but eventually found myself in a rut I only recently got out of. Through friends, coaches, and just reflecting myself I came to realize that just because that worked back then it would not necessarily work for me now. I honestly think that goes for anybody. I do not know the science behind it, but I am sure it just has to do with our bodies changing with age. As time goes on our bodies need different things from us to run as efficiently as possible.

I realized that this time around I needed to change some things. As you know I've started doing a lot more weight training rather than just cardio at the gym because of my personal trainer. The most amusing part is that I'm not as big of a fan of cardio anymore. I do it at the end of my workouts still but I more or less need to work myself up to it. I also had to change up my diet this time as well. I won't go into this too much at all since I dedicated a whole series of posts to this, but I changed the calorie amount for each meal and basically restructured the entire way I was doing things. This new way of doing things have been proven effective for me. I finally found something that is easy to stick to and I am finally seeing results again with. I think both of these factors are very important.

Sometimes changes in our routine are more than necessary to see the results we truly want. It is also important so we do not get bored and too accustomed to what we are doing now as well. In my routine now I finally was able to push through and get past the 25 lbs lost mark after hovering around it for weeks if not months. I am just shy of 27 lbs down now and still going. I don't think I would have even gotten to this point if I didn't change things up and I am so glad I did. I am actually planning on trying out Whole30 in a week as well to change up my diet a bit again. I will stick to the same calorie goals and structure I have in place right now, but will just cut out some foods for the time being to get even better results and some even healthier habits in the long run.

To summarize everything here I want to suggest that from time to time you reevaluate what you are doing and see if some changes may be beneficial to you. One of the reasons I am trying out Whole30 because I know I have a lot of sugar cravings and cutting out sugar even further from my diet would really help me out. I decided to try out training sessions because I knew just cardio and very light weight training wasn't doing the trick, and I think it was the best decision I made for me. I knew I needed to change what I was doing and I listened to the people around me offering advice, but I more importantly listened to myself and what my body was telling me. Do your best to do the same. Don't let yourself get frustrated with a lack of results and take some time to instead think about why there is a lack of results. Be willing to do what you need to do to get into the habits you want and live the life you want and always be willing to change from time to time.

Self care is very important. I know I hear the phrase all the time. Maybe it is a "Self care Sunday" caption on a social media post or something similar. I know I have said it myself a few times in a Snapchat or Instagram post. What I really want to look into today is what self care really means, and what it means to me specifically.

I feel like the stereotypical meaning of self care is pretty much about pampering and relaxing. Maybe it is taking a nice bubble bath with a fancy Lush bath bomb. It could also be getting a nice massage and relaxing for the day. Maybe you decided to take the entire day off from life to binge watch Netflix with a bowl of popcorn. Heck it could even be treating yourself to an early pumpkin spice latte. I honestly could make a list that went on and on and on. Self care to a lot of people means relaxing and doing something fun and pampering that you wouldn't do on a normal basis.

I think this form of self care is really important sometimes. Everyone deals with stress from time to time. Some of us deal with it better than others. One thing I do a lot for myself personally is a face mask. I am sure a lot of people know but I am pretty big into skin care, so of course I love to fit a mask in when I can. This is just something I don't have the time to do too often, especially during the week. It is like a special treat to me when I make the time to do it and it sure does relax me. I write these blogs every week as a form of self care as well. Typically I light a nice candle on my desk and type away on my laptop. I honestly find this very therapeutic. Even on the weeks I am not too sure on the topic I am going to write about, once I get myself into the motion I can finish my post in no time as the words just flow out of me. I think it is extremely important to fit these things in from time to time to unwind and to destress yourself.

I also wanted to mention the kinds of self care that people don't always think about. Sure the self care we all think about in a fun way is very nice and relaxing to do from time to time, but what about the self care we should do a little more often for our overall wellbeing? My first example and something I mention a lot is making sure you are getting enough water. I actually learned just how important drinking enough water is yesterday morning. On Friday I did not do too well drinking the amount of water I do my best to fit in daily. I would say I drank about half of what I normally do. That resulted in a horrible night's sleep, waking up feeling completely exhausted, and waking up with a killer headache. As soon as I got about 40 of the 80 ounces I drink daily in me I felt perfectly fine again. Clearly drinking enough water is a huge thing we can do for self care. Another is eating healthy foods. If you are feeling sluggish and tired all the time, chances are you need to change things up a bit. I know I always feel better when I am eating a balanced diet. Exercise is a big one too of course. I could also make a huge list of these types of self care activities.

Now that I have covered the types of self care I see, I am betting you are wondering which I feel is more important. Although yes the self care for our health is crucial to living our best life and really living at all... I feel that both of these are important in the right balance. Sure maybe living completely healthy and being in great shape is amazing, but if you do not let yourself enjoy life from time to time what is the point? Maybe you are destressing yourself and treating yourself often enough, but if you are completely unhealthy on the inside what good is that really going to do? I think we as living humans need to focus on both of these things to live the lives we want to have. One form really cannot survive completely without the other.

Take some time and think about some of the ways you practice self care. Is one outweighing the other? Are you doing your best to live a healthy life and make healthy choices the majority of the time? Are you making sure you set aside some time just for you and to do something you enjoy? As long as you take the time to fit both of these into your schedule at healthy intervals, you are most definitely taking care of yourself.
