Positively Weightless

A healthy life not only means physically healthy, but mentally as well. Healthy eating, healthy exercising habits, and a positive attitude are all important and help maintain balance in life. I decided to combine my love of writing and my positivity to change the world in hopes that any reader can also become positively weightless, and lead them to a healthy life.

I had an entire post planned out for this week. I wanted to talk about food and some of the choices I have been making with my diet right now and changes I want to make moving forward. I pretty much decided to do that at the beginning of last week, but then inspiration for something different struck me. Before I get into the point, however, I think a little back explanation is needed.

I think every single person has experienced envy in their life at some point. Even as small kids we usually would experience it from time to time in the form of your sibling getting a bigger ice cream sundae than you or your friend getting a new toy that you didn't. I would say it is probably safe to say the envy is programmed in us as humans. When you get older it becomes about bigger things though. Maybe you are single and envy someone else's relationship. Same goes for someone wanting children and someone has just announced they are expecting. I can say once you reach a certain age you start seeing these types of announcements everywhere especially with how prominent social media is.

When your life is falling into place I think it is a pretty normal reaction to want to share it with the world. I know I constantly am mentioning how much I love my job. I see engagement and/or pregnancy announcements on a fairly regular basis online. Maybe someone bought a new house and has shared a beautiful picture of their new home as well. I am sure a lot of the times people who have lives that aren't exactly as they pictured roll their eyes or make a rude comment about these kinds of posts, but the whole point I am working my way up to here is why let it bother you so much?

I say it all the time but I have grown and changed so much over the past few years. I am an incredibly positive person (most of the time, we all have bad days) and I do my best to trust in fate. A few years ago I was extremely underpaid, bitter about being single, frustrated because I let myself gain weight back, and overall I would say in some ways I really just hated myself and how my life was going. I overcame that with a lot of patience, effort, and time. Once I started thinking positive things in my life slowly started to go in the right direction and they still continue to align. I also put the work in. Sure I love my job now but it was a lot to learn at first. My first few weeks I was terrified I wouldn't get the hang of it and felt like I was in over my head. I put the work in and still do to make sure I can keep up with my work and keep loving it the way I do. Same with getting healthy as well. I definitely have days I would rather have something not as healthy for dinner and not go to the gym during the week but I put in the work for that as well. Staying positive isn't always an easy thing to do all the time either especially if you have the habit of reading the news a lot like me. Things are still in the path of aligning in my life, but they are certainly on the way there.

With all of that being said I recently was inspired for the topic for this post by friends that I met up with for the first time in a while. I am going to give Gina, Kristin, and Desiree a shameless shoutout here. You all inspired me to change the topic of my post today. The other day we all met up for dinner to finally catch up and it really was just beautiful to see where our lives have taken us. All in such different stages of our lives, but we've all grown so much through these years for the better and nothing makes me happier. Do I wish we could see each other more often? Of course but it is also great that its like no time has passed when we do as well.

When you see friends, coworkers, family members, or even acquaintances on social media with such happy stages in their lives and their emotional growth etc. you should feel nothing but happiness for them. A bitter person would let envy come out and cause a lot of feelings of anger toward a person that is in a different stage of their life. It takes nothing to be happy for the people around you when they reach a milestone in their life. It takes nothing to be happy for a friend when they are doing something incredibly exciting and inspiring in their life. It also takes nothing to be inspired by their achievements as well. In the end what does bitterness and envy leave you with? Nothing of value that is for sure!

Envy and positivity simply cannot exist in tandem. If you want to truly be a positive person you need to cheer others on instead of wanting what they have. Years ago when I saw a marriage, pregnancy, promotion etc. announcement on social media I probably would have let it annoy me. That was until I let myself truly believe that fate was doing its work. I will experience everything I am meant to at just the right time. Not allowing someone else's happiness bring you down simply because you do not have those things is a great feeling and I highly suggest you remove those shackles as well. Put your faith in fate as I always say and realize that you are just on your own timeline.

I am pretty excited to say that this post is officially my 100th post on this page. In some ways I feel like it flew by and in others I feel like I took forever to get to this point. Either way it is a milestone and I am going to celebrate it!

First I want to reflect on how much has changed since I first opened this page back when I was fresh out of college looking for work. Back then I was pretty scared for the future. Back then I was a much different person. To say I have grown through these past years would be an understatement. I know it sounds so cliché to say but I almost wish I could talk to that girl today. As I said I was a new college graduate with absolutely no idea where to start looking into my future. I was not only worried about the financial aspect of things but the fact that I was backtracking on my weight-loss was pretty stressful as well. I was scared and confused and I really only started this page as a way to hopefully put my English degree to good use and write what I knew at the time. This page has become so much more than that. If I could show that girl the person I am today I might have not been so scared.

I don't want to spend this entire post reflecting on the past. As I mentioned already I consider this 100th post a milestone I am reaching. I feel that milestones are absolutely something to celebrate and to look back on what got you there. I have mentioned setting and reaching small goals in a previous post, and yes this is similar but not exactly the same. To me, the small goals are simply stepping stones that lead us to the big milestones. Take this one for example. Every goal with this page I set and reached for myself was a small step to this milestone. 25, 50, 75 posts helped me reach 100. Setting the goal to post every week was also a means to achieving this.

All of your small goals are eventually leading you in the direction of the big ones. If it is weight-loss I mentioned setting small goals so the bigger picture doesn't seem so unachievable. I personally set my first goal to be 30 lbs, then 80 lbs after that and so on. All of those are on the track to achieving my overall goal weight. Every pound lost is a step to the big milestone that is your goal weight.

I stand by what I mentioned in the past as far as setting small goals goes. I personally believe that is the biggest chance of success because the big picture is broken down. One might see needing to lose around 170 lbs as a huge deal. Breaking it up that way makes it far less intimidating, and reaching the milestone of that 170 lbs lost is that much more exciting!

For everyone that has been following my blog through these years: Thank you! If you read every week, once a month, or have only ever read one post on my page I appreciate it very much. Knowing I just may help someone along the way of this hobby of mine makes it that much more special to me. Thank you for helping me keep the passion alive and giving me the drive to reach this milestone of 100 posts. Here is to 100 more!

As we continue on through January and 2019 working toward our goals we will want to see progress. What else are we working towards when it comes to a goal other than progress right? I think one of the most important things to remember while working toward a goal is how many different ways we can see progress. There are many obvious ways to see that you are making headway toward your goals, but there are a ton of smaller ways as well that are often overlooked. I think it is extremely important to remember to see this small progress and be proud of yourself for it.

Take my goal for this year as well as my overall goal with this page for example: loosing weight. I think the overall progress of a goal such as this is to reach a certain weight or a certain number of pounds lost. That is in the simplest of terms a sure sign of progress with a weight-loss and health goal. Think of all the little signs of progress in between as well. One example would be the ability to stay on track with healthy meals and with your meal plan. If you are someone like myself that has a history of overeating which led to a weight problem, that is a pretty clear sign I am doing something right. Another would be just overall feeling better and having more energy due to healthier habits. Maybe you are sleeping better, have more energy in the day, or even just overall feeling a lot less sluggish. That is a huge sign that you are making progress as well.

Another example would be exercising and training at the gym. I think most people's overall goal with that is to either look a certain way from weight training or another goal that leads to weight-loss. I started off last year going to the gym 3 days a week. When I felt I was capable of adding another day I did. That is progress. I am noticing small changes in the mirror from my weight training as well. My last training session I was able to trap bar deadlift 80 lbs on each side of the trap bar as well. A year ago I would never think I would be doing that. For sure a sign of progress in my strength. These are all small changes and signs that I am making small progress toward my goal.

The biggest point I want to get across with my post here is to not sell yourself short! I have said that so many times before, and I am sometimes guilty of it myself, but just because you are not seeing the results you think you should, it does not mean you are not making progress. I used weight-loss and exercise as my main example here but this goes for any goal you are aiming towards. Maybe you are trying to save money. Just because you might not have as much put aside as you'd like I am sure you have already said no to spending during times you would have before setting your goal. Maybe you started making your morning coffee at home instead of a daily Starbucks run. That is progress. Progress is progress no matter how big or small.

Keep working toward your goal and do not give up just because you may not be exactly where you want to be at the moment. Isn't losing 1 lb in a 3 week span better than nothing or even gaining? Sure that is not a whole lot of progress for that span of time, but it is still a step in the right direction. Allow yourself to be proud of any progress no matter how big or small. If you are not seeing the progress you want then maybe it is time to take a step back and reevaluate your approach. Keep going and don't give up and you will see the level of progress you want in no time!

I want to start this post off by saying Happy New Year to you all! With every brand new year there is the opportunity to start a better path in your life. Really a new year isn't the only time for this, every brand new day is just as good a time to start as any. I think it is fairly common to set new goals and start new projects at the beginning of the year. I mentioned that my big goal in 2019 is to continue my journey to get healthier and lose weight. In general I want to just continue to grow as a person and improve myself. I think really that is the basic drive behind everyone's goals, to be a better person.

I want to dedicate this post to offering some advice that may guide you with your overall goals. Some are health/fitness tips and some are just overall wellness tips. Sure I have so much room to grow and improve myself, I think everyone does, but I wanted to offer some wisdom as to the things I will be trying to apply to my life. A lot of this will be things I have already mentioned in previous posts, but I think you will see why I bring them up.

First and foremost I think one of the most important things you can do for your body is drinking enough water. I was lacking in this department over the last few weeks and to say I felt yucky would be an understatement. I personally get headaches, sleep horribly, and overall just do not feel great when I know I am not drinking enough water. It honestly is so simple to do too. I know some people don't think so, but I would say you need to just find a way that makes it easier to get your eight glasses a day in. For some it means adding some flavoring to the water. For others it means a special bottle that marks how much you need to drink by certain times in the day. I personally have a 20 oz water bottle that I know I need to fill and drink at least 4 times a day before I leave work. There are even devices now that can remind you to drink water during the day. Trust me if you make an effort to make sure you are getting plenty of water, especially if you know you do not drink nearly enough, you will feel so much better.

Next I would say that you need to sit down and come up with a game plan for yourself so you can reach your goals with ease. I personally know I am going to stick with Monday-Thursdays at the gym. Within those days I will do cardio on Mondays and Wednesdays and weight training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My personal trainer is awesome enough to write out a plan for me to do on my own on Tuesdays and I get to work out with him on Thursdays which makes things much easier. Another great thing to plan out is your meals and when you will doing your meal prep. If you haven't considered meal prepping I highly suggest you do. If you have all of this mapped out you are probably going to stick to your plan a lot better.

If your goal is not fitness related planning is still a very useful skill to utilize. For example ,I plan this blog as well. Every Sunday is my day to post on this page which makes it much easier for me to stick to. I love writing for this page so it isn't a chore or anything, but even if you love to do something if you do not have a plan it will be easy to put things off. Before when I did not have a posting schedule for this page I would just write whenever I felt like it. This led to huge gaps between posts. The same thing will likely happen for you. Set time aside every week or every day or whatever works best for you to dedicate to your goals.

The biggest thing when working toward goals to remember is to never be too hard on yourself, and reward yourself along the way. Now I do not mean if you are losing weight to go out and reward yourself with a treat. Sure that is okay sometimes but one thing I learned during Whole30 is that food should never be that big of a reward. Since I have been on this journey and sticking to it I decided to buy myself a new Fitbit as I think I have mentioned. I figured buying myself a newer and better model was earned since I now am pushing myself so much further than I thought I would with my workouts. I have a lot more use for the features on this new model now. I rewarded myself with something that is going to push me even closer to my goals. Do not beat yourself up when you back track or slip up as well. You are only human. We all make mistakes. Do not let a few lbs gained completely deter you from losing them again and even more afterwards.

With your New Year goals I want you all to just take things one step at a time. I am not perfect and I by no means am going toward my goals without taking a step back once and a while. Do your best to move forward and enjoy yourself along the way. Life is truly about the journey after all, not necessarily the destination.
