Positively Weightless

A healthy life not only means physically healthy, but mentally as well. Healthy eating, healthy exercising habits, and a positive attitude are all important and help maintain balance in life. I decided to combine my love of writing and my positivity to change the world in hopes that any reader can also become positively weightless, and lead them to a healthy life.

My page essentially is all about transformation. As many of you probably know this page started as a weight-loss journey page and that eventually morphed into a health and positivity page. Through the years since I have started this page the blog itself not only discussed transformation, but it also went through a transformation of its own. Change and transformation is a big part of life. If we are not growing in life then where are we going exactly? To get into the topic of transforming further I wanted to talk about the place where I have personally transformed the most, with being active and working out.

Let's start at the beginning. If you knew me in high school you probably knew I was not active in any way, shape, or form. I was extremely clumsy and unathletic (still am to some extent haha) so I absolutely dreaded gym class. I really only liked the units of gym class that involved independent movements such as walking the track or going to the weight room. As you can imagine the first few years of college for me were pretty much not active at all. I was happy to find out there were no gym class requirements at my school so that meant I really did not do anything too active. That is until I decided to start taking care of my health. As you might know that journey was what inspired me to start this page.

When I started really putting an effort into losing weight and getting healthier I finally started to get a bit more active. Because I was really nervous at the idea of working out in front of people I started smaller. The WiiFit was my best friend at that time. Just in case you do not know, WiiFit is a video game that has a bunch of mini games that involve getting up and being active. I started out doing a bunch of different WiiFit exercises for 30 minutes a day and eventually turned that into an hour when I could. If you are new and uncomfortable with working out I highly recommend you use an at home program like this to get started. Eventually WiiFit was not much of a challenge for me anymore so I knew I needed to change it up. That was when I started going to the gym. As many of you know I started going with a friend at first. That was a great way to try out the experience before I took the plunge and got my own membership. I am honestly so glad that I did that back then.

When I started going to the gym on a more regular basis again I started with two days a week and that was literally just cardio. That was about a year and a half ago (yes there was a gap in between when I got my membership and when I started regularly using it again). Back then I was only doing about 30 minutes of cardio and that was only twice a week. Eventually I upped that to three times a week. That's when the personal trainer stepped in. I went into full details about my initial experience with that in a previous post. If you are curious you can find that here. Initially I was annoyed and felt pressured to do the free trial session, but I am so glad I did. It has helped me immensely. I have continued to work out with a trainer once a week since then. That is what prompted me to up my days at the gym and expand the activities I do there as well. Now I go five days a week. Three days are weight training and the other two are cardio for 50 minutes. I went from only doing 30 minutes of cardio to doing a huge range of activities at the gym. Just yesterday I did back squats with 40 lbs on each side of the bar (125 lbs total) and that was such an amazing accomplishment to me. I have a confidence at the gym now that I never would have imagined possible.
I figured I would drop in a shameless
post-workout selfie at the gym yesterday. ;-)

To go from someone who was scared to step into a gym to someone who is going five times a week doing all kinds of things is such a transformation to me. Trust me if I could do that so can you! If you want to start getting active start at home. There are plenty of resources online. Google beginners exercises or look up YouTube videos. You can even go for walks or runs. Just get up and get moving. If you are already a gym member I highly recommend a personal trainer. I will admit it is expensive and I feel very blessed that I have a job that allows me to have access to those tools now, but if you can afford it too it will help you gain knowledge and a whole new level of confidence in the gym. Try and make your own transformations in your life. My biggest one is my workout transformation but life is full of them. Embrace them and look forward to the new person you will become.

First of all I want to wish you all a very Happy Easter if you celebrate! Sure it is a holiday but I am still sticking to my blogging schedule. Since it is Easter that means that I am officially finished with Whole30. I kept Whole30 going for a total of 48 days during lent. I wanted to dedicate this post to sharing my feelings on the second round and of course my results. I have a lot of results to share both on my feelings and the physical measurements and weight as well.

First off I wanted to talk about my personal feelings during Whole30 this time around. A lot of the sites I read said that the second round was typically harder than the first. I personally felt the complete opposite. I had a way easier time sticking to the meal plan this time around. Temptation 100% was all around me though. Stuffing the Easter baskets for my niece and nephew and little ones for my bosses' kids was a pretty big temptation with all that candy. Overall though it was pretty easy for me to ignore. I made sure I had a ton of Whole30 approved foods in the house to snack on whenever I needed. I would say preparation is key to being successful. I always made sure I was prepared for my week so temptation really wasn't too big of an issue for me.

Overall my body feels great too. I have been sleeping better on most nights and I had a lot more energy. A lot of the time I have next to no energy at the beginning of my week at work. We are talking almost dozing off at my desk type of low energy. That never happened once I started doing Whole30 again. I have been having extra energy at the gym too. Besides one day where I decided to take a day off I have been completely sticking to my gym schedule and I have even been going to the gym on Saturdays for 6 weeks now. I honestly think part of that was the extra energy I felt while doing Whole30. I just feel great when I am eating so much healthier like this. For the most part I really didn't crave bad foods either which is amazing for me.

Now for the good part, the actual results. Whole30 is a lot about the non scale victories. I will share my actual numbers in a little bit, but there were clear signs of non scale victories as well. I recently noticed how much better my clothes have been fitting. I am wearing my one pair of pants for work in this shameless bathroom mirror picture. I noticed a week or two ago just how much extra room I had in those and all of my other pants. I figured I would show the extra room I have in my pants now as a visual for my results. These pants were also a little snug when I started back in March. That's a pretty sure sign that you are losing weight. As I mentioned before the overall way I was feeling are non scale victories too, but now for the fun part. In these 48 days I lost a total of 21.5 lbs. I also made sure I took all of my measurements and I lost a total of 8 inches from all over my body. My waist was down 2 inches, chest was down 3 inches, thighs were down 1.5 inches, abdominal area was down .5 inch, and my arms were down 1 inch. My BMI went down 2.9 too! Not bad at all!

I had a great experience on Whole30 the second time around and would still highly recommend it. It is pretty restrictive so I am going to say it is not for everyone. For example if you are a vegetarian there are not a whole lot of protein options since you cannot have soy or beans. If you are looking for a way to get healthier though I would highly suggest you do some research on the program. I love the way I have been feeling eating this way. Way more energy for both every day life and at the gym, sleeping a lot better, and even overall just in a much better mood. I am enjoying myself today on Easter having a lot of the things I haven't been on this plan, but I fully plan on jumping right back into it during the week. Moving forward I plan to keep up with a version of a Whole30 meal plan. I will treat myself sometimes but during the week especially I plan on continuing with it. If you are looking to try something new why not take a shot?

I have been in an incredibly good mood and extremely motivated the past few weeks. I figured when things picked up at work this would have died down a bit, but that has not been the case. A pretty big part of that is from having support. I have family, friends, coworkers, etc. that have offered support in my life in one way or another and that is a great feeling. There is no better feeling than when someone tells you they notice your hard work and to keep it up. In my case I am mainly referring to getting healthy, but this can go for any part of life. In my earlier blogging days I wrote an entire post about the people in my life at the time that were huge support systems. We are talking back in 2014, one of my very first posts (if you are curious you can find it here). That post had a different spin to what I want to talk about today. Instead of recognizing who supports you the most in your life, think about supporting someone else. My first example is going to be with working out and eating right. I by no means am an expert on these topics but I know what has been working for me and what I have been doing. When I can and if I see fit I love to offer little tips and tricks that work for me. Essentially that is exactly what I do with this blog. As long as you have the right approach doing so, supporting someone through a health journey is great! To expand a bit, a great example would be offering workout ideas to someone. An even better way would be to have them tag along to the gym with you if you have a guest pass. I know when I first started working out the thought of going alone was terrifying. I love going on my own now but if it wasn't for my friend Stephanie, I probably never would have joined. Starting out is intimidating and most people do not know where to start. Having someone there to guide them makes it less scary. If food is a struggle for them you can easily support them as well. Offer you go to a restaurant with healthier options or even cook a healthy meal together instead of take-out. Share experiences with foods that you have had and even make recipe suggestions. As long at the other person has show initiative and wants your support, small suggestions and ideas can go a long way. Support is also great for any big changes in someone's life. A new job, a new relationship, a big financial decision, (etc.).  Usually anyone is going to need support with these types of events in their life. Sometimes you might not always agree with them. What is important to remember is that you can support them even if you do not agree. Maybe someone in your life has started a new relationship with a partner you are not sure is right for them. To put it bluntly that is not your decision to make. In my opinion your best option is going to be to voice your concerns in a careful way but then also let them know you are still there for them. The last thing you want to do is give them an ultimatum. That is in no way a form of support. Offer your support to the ones you love in any way that you can. I am betting it means a lot to them. You don't always need to agree with their decisions, but I am sure it is nice to know that someone is there for them no matter what. Think about how you feel in similar situations. Maybe the ones around you don't always agree with what you have done or decided, but knowing there is someone there for you either way the wind blows is a great feeling. The best types of relationships in life are the ones where you can tell each other anything. You can tell them your decisions and circumstances and they are still by your side. If things are rough they are offering support and advice to help you get out of that hole. If things are great they are standing there smiling with you. Be that person for someone you love.

This past week for me was a bit of a struggle. Okay saying it was a struggle may be a bit overdramatic. I felt myself not exactly being able to get everything done I wanted to during the past week. Work has become a bit more stressful and I have taken on some extra work so that is a slight contributing factor. Nothing this girl cant handle though! The best thing to come out of this week being a bit more difficult? A perfect topic for this week's blog. When things get rough in your life, I want to encourage you to listen to yourself and trust your instincts. My first example is going to be with working out. As many of you likely know already I have been going to the gym five days a week now. I recently started going on Saturdays in addition to my Monday-Thursday schedule. My trainer is even sending Saturday workouts on top of the Tuesday and Thursday workouts he already writes (I know, he really goes above and beyond). I have been so proud of myself for not only sticking to the four days a week but also adding the extra day! When Wednesday hit this week I did not feel great. Getting to the gym was quite the struggle all week, and Wednesday felt so much worse. I was tired, unmotivated, and had a headache for most of the day. I took that as a sign. My body was telling me it needed a rest day so I listened to it. That also let me rest so I was extra ready for my training session the next day. If you have an off day like this take some time to evaluate why you're feeling that way. In other words, as long as you are not using it as an excuse to just blow it off, you are completely justified. Listen to your body and take a night off. With the added weight training during my week now I have also noticed my hunger has upped a bit. Just yesterday I went to the gym around 10am, I got home and made a nice lunch around noon. Once 2pm hit my stomach was growling. I don't like to snack that early especially since I had my lunch a bit later than usual that day. Regardless, I decided to listen to my body. Clearly I was hungry so I made a nice snack of apples sprinkled with cinnamon, raisins, and almond butter. That was plenty filling to hold me over until dinner. I find that mapping out certain times for certain meals or snacks works the best for me. Everyone is different. Whatever system you may be on, If you feel hungry a few hours before a meal then your body is trying to tell you something. Give it something to hold you over. A piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, a rice cake with some peanut butter. Snacks that are small and not too big on calories. Do not use this as an excuse to over eat, but do not deprive yourself either. The longer you ignore those signs of hunger the more likely you are going to be to over eat during your next meal.

My last example is going to be to give yourself a break mentally if you need to. To go back to my post two weeks ago, Dealing With Emotions, I want to encourage you to find something creative for stress. As I mentioned previously work has picked up a bit for me these last few weeks. It helps the days feel faster so that is great, and its also great to know that I am trusted so much. Yes, I know, another shameless plug here about how much I love my job. Regardless as to being okay with the extra work, it still means more on my plate. This week I also started bullet journaling and that has been a huge help. I also have been letting myself get some extra sleep when I can. In a effort to keep stress at bay I am using my time in ways that are going to be much better for my mental health. I am going to repeat myself here and say again that you need to listen to yourself. If you are getting stressed that is a huge signal that you need to make an effort to decompress. Meditation, yoga, going to bed earlier, journaling... I could go on and on. You will thank yourself later if you take some time to try and de-stress yourself!
New to bullet journaling, but I took this weekend to set up
the pages for the coming week! Great creative
way to get organized and de-stress!
It is pretty easy. Trust your intuition. Trust your body. Allow yourself to take the signals your body is giving you and do something productive with them. The most important thing to remember is to not feel guilty about it! If you need to take a day off of the gym do it! If you need to have an extra snack because you are hungry throughout the day eat one! If you need to cancel plans after work because you need a night to sit back with a glass of wine and catch up on your shows do it! Try to stick to your schedule and routines as much as possible, but if you need to take some time here and there to rest, do it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing any of that. Do what you need to do for yourself to be happy and healthy. Listen to all the signals your body is giving you.
