Positively Weightless

A healthy life not only means physically healthy, but mentally as well. Healthy eating, healthy exercising habits, and a positive attitude are all important and help maintain balance in life. I decided to combine my love of writing and my positivity to change the world in hopes that any reader can also become positively weightless, and lead them to a healthy life.

Here we are at the end of yet another year. I know, I pretty much never post on Mondays like this, but I wanted to make sure I fit my end of the year post in before Friday. To be completely transparent I have started writing this post a few times now. This year was a doozy to say the least. Quite frankly I found 2021 to be mentally exhausting and I am not about to go into politics or the pandemic or anything of the sorts. We are all living in the same world right now, I know we all are fully aware of what is going on. But I do think it is safe to say that this year has mentally drained all of us in some way. So, let's dive in a little bit here!

This year marked one of the biggest steps in my life which was moving out of my parents' house and having my very own space. In a lot of ways this was very emotional and difficult for me, in just as many ways I loved it. I went from living under my parents' roof to my own and being responsible for every aspect of my life. Now, I did a lot of things independently while I lived there, but it was nice to just have some of Mom's cooking on nights I didn't feel like cooking. I also am very close with my parents, so the change was very emotional for me as well. This was pretty much the defining moment of 2021 for me and the biggest change. This year I also found a love of watercolor painting as I have previously mentioned, re-sparked my love of Marvel movies, made my very own sourdough starter from scratch, and found a love of silent movies. Looking back, I truly did a lot this year, even if they were all insignificant things, they still made up and entire 365 days of my life.

This past year has been hard on many of us as well and that does not go forgotten. I personally went to more funerals that I would care to have attended. Work was busy and overwhelming at times, and that took a bit of a toll on my mental health. I am lucky though and it was an insignificant change compared to others. Personally, I was able to recognize when I needed a break and I made sure I took it. I made time for myself when I could. I painted when I wanted to express myself. I journaled when I needed to expel an emotion. I read so I could escape the real world for even just a few moments. I also stopped obsessing with the media and political coverage. I stat informed now, but not more than I need to as following every small thing was only heightening my anxiety. I found a balance and took breaks where I needed to.

I will be 30 on Friday, and part of me is dreading that, but a bigger part of me wants to spend the first year of my 30s the best I can. I know I say this every year, but I want to focus in on my diet and exercise more. Instead of restricting to the point of obsessing I want to find a balance. I want to find a level of exercise that I feel comfortable with and can grow with. I want to gain that spark I had for the gym before the pandemic hit. I also want to make more time for my hobbies. I would love to do some more painting. Maybe get another book I can follow for more practice and explore the medium even more. I would love to watch the Marvel movies in chronological order and read even more than I did before. I want to spend the first year of my thirties really focusing in on me, before I have a family, I need to change the focus to in the future.

If you are reading this, I want you to take some time and really reflect on your year. Are you satisfied with how your time was spent? If not, how can you change that in 2022? Did you surround yourself with people that truly care about you? How can you change your life in the new year to live your life to the fullest? I know this sounds cliche but if 2021 has taught me anything, it is that our time here on this earth is limited, and we never know when that time will be up. Are you making the most out of it? To end I want to wish you all a very happy and healthy new year! Let's all make 2022 a great year!

Well here we are again. Another year is rapidly approaching it's end and we are at the end of yet another November which means Thanksgiving in America is just around the corner. In four days to be exact! If you celebrate, every year for quite a few years now you might remember that I like to take the Sunday before and write about the things I am thankful for. Yes, I know this page has taken a back burner this year. Part of me is sad about that, but the other part of me is happy I decided to take my mental health seriously and do what I needed to do to keep it in check. I am getting off track here though! Every year I take this post to reflect on the things I am thankful for, and I wanted to make sure that even though I am not posting as often here, that I still do that! I am encouraging you to do the same. Sure the turkey and pies are great on Thanksgiving but I think it is important to remember the entire purpose of the holiday as well.

I think this year especially I am thankful for my health, both psychical and mental. Now when I mention my mental health it typically just means I have been extra stressed from work and having some anxiety or I have been watching the news too often and feeling a little depressed about the state of the world. I want to acknowledge that I am very lucky in that department and I know there are a lot of people, especially in the world we are living in at the moment, that are struggling a lot harder than I am. But with that being said I want to remind you all that if you are struggling no matter how big or small, that matters and you should take it seriously. I had a lot of big changes this year and given all of that I think I have been doing very well. I am thankful that I am able to recognize when I need to turn off of the world for a little bit and recharge. I am thankful that I am in the place I am today.

I am also thankful for what 2021 brought as a whole! I will revisit this topic for my year-end post, but I wanted to take some time in this post as well. 2021 has been such a fruitful year in my opinion, even if some of the events in the world as a whole have not been as great. I saw best friends marry the loves of their lives. My other best friend not only started a new job this year but her precious little son turned one. I moved into my own apartment and took such a huge step forward in my life finally gaining my own full independence. I found a new love of watercolor painting which has been a wonder for my mental health as well. I continued to write here when I could but also write poetry as well. I also found a new love of silent movies and have watched as many Charlie Chaplin films as HBO Max had available. I have a new love of classical piano music as well and that has helped me relax so much. Overall 2021 has been a pretty decent year and I can't wait to dive into that a little more at the end of 2021.

As always the most important thing I am thankful for this year is the ones I love. Sadly this Thanksgiving families all over the world might have one less person sitting to enjoy the meal. I am thankful that my Thanksgiving table will be seating the usual seven. I am thankful for the relationship I have with my family because I know some are not as lucky. Sure we are family so we do not agree or get along 100% of the time, but at the end of the day we would all be there for each other no matter what. I am thankful for all the people in my life outside of family. For friends, even the friends I no longer keep in touch with as much as I would like, for just every last person in my life that has impacted my life. I am Thankful for all of you!

I hope you also take some time this week to reflect on what you are thankful for. Spend just a moment to count your blessings. I am guessing that even if you are not in a great place right now, you can think of one or two things at the very least to be thankful for. I know I have a lot in my life to be thankful for and just that alone also makes me thankful that I have a blessed life. I hope I am able to remember that on the days I feel a little off. All it takes is a few moments to reflect on your life and what about your life makes you feel grateful to be you. With that being said I will end here. If you celebrate I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving! I will see you soon!

Pardon me while I do my little walk of shame here. So far in 2021 I have taken quite a few breaks from posting on this page. There are a handful of reasons for that. I suppose this post I am going to talk about all those things and try and put a positive spin on it. 2021 has been the start of a lot of positive changes in my life and those all still stand, but let’s face it, the last year and a half have been nothing but stressful, worrisome, and all around miserable in some way or another for all of us. You would have to be living under a rock, a full-blown sociopath, or just overall not in touch with reality at all to say that the past year and a half has not in some way taken a toll on you. I don’t say any of that to be rude or mean but I just mean that I genuinely think everyone has been affected in some way, shape, or form. You are not weak or somehow less than because of that, trust me.

Let me start with the obvious. I have just not felt motivated in any sense of the word lately. I am not on a consistent gym schedule. I still make time for my hobbies but not even slightly in the way I would like to. Sure painting, reading, and writing are all things I enjoy doing, but it is the mental exhaustion that delays me from doing them as much as I would like. Work has been at times this year extremely busy, and we just are about to phase into our busiest time of the year. When I get home from work, I typically cook myself dinner or heat up leftovers, and then I have been trying to do something I enjoy after that. But after a long busy day at work it is a lot easier to just turn on the TV or play Animal Crossing… those are also hobbies which are fine to have, but I like to change it up for activities that engage my mind a bit more than that as well. I get the motivation to do them still in spurts, but not as much as I would like. This page has been a casualty of that as well.

To go off on that a bit more, my lack of motivation in updating this page as often as I would like to or as often as I used to would be a lack of positivity. Now I of course still try to be a positive person and keep that positive mental attitude (shoutout to Jacksepticeye, not trying to steal your logo!) every day and live my life in as positive of a mindset as possible, but it is also normal in life to not be so positive all the time. In fact, it is toxic to be like that all the time. Pain and suffering exist in this world and if we just try to ignore it or put a positive spin on those things instead of allowing ourselves to feel that emotion, it genuinely is going to take a mental toll on you. That is part of the reason I have lacked motivation to keep posting on this page lately. How can I sit here and preach positivity with all the horrible things consistently occurring in this world? Thousands of bodies of Native Americans being found at residential schools, people dying from all sorts of illnesses and diseases (including mental illnesses) some related to the pandemic, but not all, people just in general treating other human beings horribly. How am I going to sit around and say, “everything happens for a reason!” when all of this is going on in the world. It just hasn’t felt right to me lately.

Yes, I know that we probably need this positivity now more than ever, and I agree with that. Sometimes when darkness surrounds us, all we need is that little beacon of light to pull us through. But in a lot of ways there is a time and a place for it as well. I suppose my lesson here, as I have said on this page in the past, is to realize when the right moment for that beacon to shine through is. When we lose someone we love, the last thing we want to hear is that it was meant to happen or that everything happens for a reason. Sure, those words might ring true, but they need to be left unsaid until the time comes to fully be able to process and comprehend them. I think that is what I have been doing these past few months. Waiting on the proper time to assert my positivity through my page for not just my audience, but myself as well. I think I needed to let myself just slow down and process all the changes that have occurred over the past year and a half, both good and bad, and not focus so much on the pros and cons.

So what happens now? I am not giving up on my blog at all despite how it looks in my posting history for 2021. I think at this point I need to go back to posting when I feel up to it. Obviously, I have responsibilities in my personal life away from the internet that must take priority. I still love to write, but when it almost feels like a burden at some points because I have a consistent schedule, that is when it is time to take a step back and rework how I am doing things. I have loved writing since I was young, so I also do not want to ruin that by pushing myself. I want to keep my love of writing for life. I also do not want to put out posts that my heart really isn’t in, hence why I haven’t been pushing myself all these months to do so. I write these posts for myself first and foremost so if my mental health is going to suffer as a result, I obviously need to take a step back. I want to do my usually traditional post during the holidays so I will for sure be doing those, and I will post as often as I feel up to. I hope any readers I might have understand that.

Let’s finish up this year with a bang! The last thing I am going to do is let the state of the world keep me from enjoying the holidays with my loved ones. Halloween is just around the corner, Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t completely excited to decorate my own apartment for Christmas this year! I want to truly enjoy all these things so I am putting my mental health first to make sure that I can. I suggest you do too! Stay positive as best you can and always remember if you need to step back, that is okay too.

I know, I keep taking weeks off of my page here. Last weekend being the 4th I was just a bit busy and did not plan ahead before going out of town with my parents for the night. But that's okay. I do this blog for me and I think just moving forward is the most important thing. Today I wanted to talk about social media a bit. I have talked about this topic a bit in the past but I have never dedicated an entire post to it. There is a lot I want to say about this particular topic so I think it is good to just dive right in!

First off I want to make sure I say that this post is not to attack anyone at all. If you are reading this and thinking I am talking about you, I am not. I am strictly talking about the topic as a whole. To be completely honest I was inspired by "White Woman's Instagram" from Bo Burnham's special Inside. Thanks again Nicole for getting me so obsessed with that haha! The song is comical on the surface, and I have more than a few posts of things he mentioned on my own Instagram admittedly, but there is certainly a deeper meaning to the song when you really listen to it. That is what I want to dive into. The way I interpreted the song is that we put up such a superficial façade to the world through social media.

We post pictures of lattes, our big happy milestones, and the new recipe we made for dinner that night. What about the bouts of depression in which we don't wash our hair for days and cry ourselves to sleep. What about the days we are just incredibly non-productive and spent most of it in dirty pajamas on the couch. I personally try to represent all sides of my life when I present myself to the world, especially on this page, but even I leave some things off of the internet. Now that is okay too. The next part of this post I am going to talk about how we do not need to share every last thing about our lives to the world, but I do think it is very misleading to never show any downsides either. Take these big social media influencers for example. Typically they are posting this highly positive posts with a picture that just encompasses their perfect lives, all mixed together with an ad for a detox tea or energy drink. You never seen most of them talking about any sort of negative emotion they might be having. I find that incredibly misleading and dangerous to present to the likely young followers they have. When on social media I think it is incredibly important to remember that the poster is only letting you see exactly what they want to about their life.

What about posting in general? Well I personally have really pulled back on my posting on social media. I am not sure if it is just because I am getting older or what, but just naturally I stopped posting about every little thing. Sure it is nice to share some milestones or brag about my amazing loaf of sourdough I baked a few weeks ago, but I rarely post anymore other than that. There are a ton of people that are on such an opposite end of the spectrum though. I say all this without judgement of course, but I genuinely wonder why some people truly feel the need to post every last thing about their lives. Life is so much more fulfilling if you just enjoy it. Just because you are not posting about donating to charity or fighting for civil rights does not mean you are not helping with those causes behind the scenes. Just because you are not sharing photos of your big purchases does not mean you get to enjoy them any less. On the opposite side of things, just because someone in your life does not react to your posts it does not mean they are any less proud of you or love you any less. I think so many of us need to relax a bit when it comes to seeking the validation of social media.

I want to make it clear again this is not an attack on anyone at all. I think we all to an extent seek validation from others especially social media. It just comes naturally as a human, seeking praise and validation from those around us. The most important thing to remember when it comes to social media is that it is simply a lens in place so we only see what the poster wants us to see. Just like in "White Woman's Instagram" when the woman allows her emotions to show through a sentimental post, that is gone almost as soon as it starts as soon as she again starts listing off things to seek validation from the viewer of her post. I think we all have a little of this in us. My advice is to just enjoy life. Instead of posting a picture of the sunset, sit with the person you love and enjoy it. Instead of pausing at a restaurant you are at to take a picture of your meal to post, eat the food, savor it, and savor the company you are with just as much. Share your emotions if you wish, but most importantly take the time to feel them. Life is meant to be lived in the moment, not paused so you can post it on Instagram.

"I am just looking to hopefully change the world through my love of writing and my positive attitude." This sentence has been in my bio of this blog for years now. Ever since I decided to focus in on a different topic for this page, since some of you may remember that this started as a weight-loss blog, that has always been right there in the corner to the right. So why bring it up now? I have been thinking lately of just that. Changing the world. How can I, Amy Maier, 29 years old (and rapidly approaching 30, or at least it feels like it) living just a normal life. Responsibilities, hobbies, routines, etc. There is nothing all that phenomenal about my life, and I say that in the most positive way possible. You may be reading this thinking the same thing. How can me, average joe change the world, and I think that is a pretty simple answer.

I think before we answer the question we need to dive into why it is being asked. Why does the world need to be changed? I am going to do my best not to dive into politics here, because I really do not want to go there, but a lot of these topics have become political. If you take a look around you, things may seem fine on the surface, but you are one of the lucky ones. We have people living on the streets. Homeless and hungry. We have children being put into horrific situations that even grown adults would not be able to live in. We have women afraid on a daily basis doing daily tasks. There is so much darkness and loss in this world and it genuinely is so sad to see that some live with such abundance while others have nothing. Some get to live their lives unpunished for committing horrible crimes while others are punished unreasonably for lesser crimes. Evil truly does roam this earth more than it rests.

So why do I bring all this up? What can we all do? The truth of the matter is we of course cannot all singlehandedly change the world. Even if we all worked together I doubt it sadly would be possible. Life is about balance and I suppose the sad truth is that if we never experienced pain or sadness or suffering we would never truly appreciate the good things in our life. We can all strive to be better people though. We can all stop focusing solely on our lives and our needs and our suffering. This world would be an incredibly lonely place if the only person living on it was you. So sure you may not be able to change the world yourself but you absolutely can do your part to make sure it doesn't get any worse.

My entire point in bringing this up is to share my thoughts on truly changing the world as much as you can. We all have hobbies and talents and ways we let our true selves shine in this life. Maybe you love to paint and write like I do. Take my blog for example. I do not have a large following. Only about 8 official followers and I do not get too many views. I have always said and still stand by the fact that I write these posts for me and the hopes that someone stumbles around them that needs them. If I have helped anyone in their struggles that means my job here has paid off. Sure I am truly not changing the world as a whole on this page, but I may have changed one person's world and that to me is a win. If you don't focus on the bigger picture, it is much easier to see how you can have an impact.

What do you truly enjoy to do in life? Do you like to paint like me? Share your artwork with the world somehow. Maybe you don't get a while lot of attention for it but I guarantee you will bring a smile to someone's face with it. If you write like I do share your work! Post that poem you have been working on where a friend may enjoy it. Even if you do not have any creative hobbies, do what you can to put a smile on someone's face today. Look, we have all had such a difficult year and a half. I do not know a single person that isn't struggling to some extent at this point into the pandemic, even if it is getting better in most places. Be a little kinder to one another. Show a little more love to one another. Work together because a small chain of kindness can have an amazing outcome for this cold, dark, world we all share.

I am going to take today's post to revisit a topic I have talked about many times on this page. I am someone who firmly believes that routines are good for all of us to have. Sure we are all different and some people do better on them than others, but I think a routine is very much a big key to getting the success in your goals that you are trying to achieve. As I have mentioned I moved recently and that in a sense threw my routines into a frenzy and I had to adapt to change things up, I still am in some ways was well, so I thought now would be a great time to revisit this topic and talk about my experience with it in recent days.

Last year I think the reason a lot of us were struggling, and maybe some of you still are because you are still working from home, is because our routines were turned upside-down essentially overnight. I personally was in the office 5 days a week, went to the gym after work 4 out of those 5 days, and on Saturdays. Suddenly I was no longer going into the office and could not go to the gym for months. I was finally in a good routine with the gym and I have not fully recovered from that even today almost a year later. If you are still struggling with this, trust me you are not alone. I know a lot of people have loved working from home but others, like myself, could not stand it. I think for a lot of people that routine being completely changed around took a big toll on our mental health.

With all of that being said I think it is important to talk about what to do when a routine is changed around. I no longer live at my parents house, so a lot of things have changed for me. Before if I didn't feel like cooking after work I could just have something my Mom made. Now I pretty much have to cook even if I do not want to. I am still trying to get my morning routine down since my commute to work is a bit shorter so that has been a change. I have an entire apartment I need to keep clean so I need to work the chores into my schedule as well. I am not complain at all and in some ways I love having these new responsibilities, but it very much is a change. I have been trying to embrace my new closer location to the gym and waking up early to go before work instead of after where I am struggling to find the motivation to go.

When things get flipped around on you, embrace it! Like I said before sure I have to cook dinner every night for myself but it gives me the chance to have no rules with it. Wednesdays from now on are going to me my pizza nights and I am going to eat that pizza on the couch and watch the new episodes of Loki every week. I want to encourage you to do the same. No I don't me pizza and Disney+ every Wednesday, I mean finding a silver lining with your routines being switched around. If you are still working from home take the time you would have spent a year ago on your commute and use it for yourself. Get in a morning workout, read a bit of a book, take extra time one a healthy breakfast in the morning. I would say the most important part of your routine getting switched around is finding a way to embrace it.

How have your routines switched around in the last year? I think it is safe to say that every single one of us have had to deal with this in some way, shape, or form. As I have been saying throughout this entire post the most important thing we can do with this is handling it in a healthy way. It is not going to do anyone any good to sit around and complain about things, like SO many people have been doing throughout this entire last year. Find a way to let this change have a positive impact on your life.

Here I am sitting down to write a blog post at 8pm on a Sunday. Typically I would have had the post well written and posted by this time, but such is life right? As I talked about last week, plans do not always pan out exactly as we want them to. Sometimes our routines are mixed up and the unexpected comes to play. No matter how hard we try, some things just cannot be accommodated for. Now I could have gotten settled in for the night here and just blew off another post, but I did not want to do that. I wanted to sit down and write down my thoughts this week so I pushed forward, and even though this post will be going up late, it will still be going up.

So let's get into today's topic. I wanted to branch off of last week's post just a bit here and talk about why it can be a good thing when life takes an unexpected turn. This past week I saw a post online saying something along the lines of: If the person you were 5 years ago saw you today, what would they think? That post was unexpectant and so positive to me. To think of all I have accomplished in just those few years is pretty amazing to me. Back then I was working at a job that if I was still only making that pay I absolutely would not have been able to move into the new place I recently did. 5 years ago I did not write poetry at all and I have since had a piece published. I have gained a lot of mental and physical strength in that time as well and to think of what me 5 years ago would think if she saw me today is a pretty emotional thought to have.

I want you to sit and think of the same question to yourself. 5 years ago where were you in comparison to today? It is possible your situation is not drastically different, or perhaps you took a turn in a negative way since then. If that is the case think of the time that has passed. What got you to where you are today. What could you improve on? What can you change? I know I personally would go back and not let myself fly off the handle when it comes to my weight loss journey. I would go back and help myself change my bad habits earlier so I may not have had such a struggle last year when we were all social distancing. I would make more time for hobbies and things I love to do rather than just getting through day to day life. I think no matter how much you wish you could change in the past it is important to remember that it is never too late to make progress.

When I look at the time that has passed in my life it is a pretty beautiful thing. Sure I am getting older, but I am getting to see myself bloom as well as the people I love around me bloom. Friends are getting married and having beautiful babies. Others are moving on to new chapters of their lives, or maybe even returning to old habits they once lost sight of. We can never get time back all we can do is make the most out of what we have left.

"If all time is eternally present. All time is unredeemable." -T.S. Elliot, Four Quartets

Do not dwell on the past, just be mindful of the fact that you from 5 years ago would likely be amazed a who you are today. If you did not make any big accomplishments in that time I think it is important to give yourself credit for the fact that you are still here. I said I wouldn't mention it again but think about the fact that you have lived over a year of a global pandemic, if anything the fact that you are here today, mentally and physically healthy after everything we have lived through in the past year is pretty darn amazing if you ask me, so do not be so hard on yourself. Remember that time is not infinite for us. We are only given so much of it in this lifetime. Do you want to sit around and dwell on what could have been? Or would you rather make the most out of it and be proud that you are here?

I know, I know. I just took a break back in March, and here I am coming back after taking 3 more weeks off. That was not intentional by any means, May was just such a busy week for me. First it was Mother's Day and I did not plan ahead and write a post before Sunday that week, then the following weekend I moved and was exhausted, and then last weekend I was on a trip for one of my longest friend's bachelorette weekend. If anything, however, this unplanned break from writing only inspired the topic for today's post, and that is that sometimes things just do not go according to plan, and that sometimes that is for the best.

Moving is a perfect example to start with for this topic. Some of you may know that I had fully planned on moving out of my parents house last Spring, but 2020 was wild so that obviously did not happen. Instead it happened almost exactly a year later. It absolutely has worked out for the best though as I have found a place I love and have settled in nicely already and the situation just overall is really good. Another pro to the original plan not working out is it gave me even more time to prepare. I had pretty much every last thing I needed in order to be living in my own place from dishes to cleaning supplies and everything in between. Certain things I overlooked when preparing a year prior, and I saved a lot more money in the meantime as well. Even actual moving day we had a few things that I did not perceive happening but everything worked out for the best.

I think another great example, which is also an extension of my last example, would be 2020 as a whole. I know I keep bringing this up, but I think it is important to remind ourselves just how strong we have been over the past year. All sorts of plans had to change last year from trips, to weddings, to birthing plans of new mothers. It is important we mourn the loss of those things in our lives and realize it is okay to still be upset. If you had to re-plan a wedding, just think of how much nicer it is going to be now that mask restrictions have been lifted and your guests no longer have to be Covid tested. If you have to re-plan a trip like me, just keep in mind it will only be that much sweeter because of the wait, and you still have that to look forward to. If you had a baby during the peak of Covid, yes nothing is going to change that but hey, silver lining, when your child is older and acting up you can remind them you gave birth in a global pandemic! 😉

Take some time and think about your life and how your planning has changed it. Trust me I am someone who plans ahead. I go to a new restaurant and I have already looked at the menu 3 times over online before we get there. I ask what clothes I should wear to something even if I know the event is pretty casual. I ask how we are going to split the check before even going to a restaurant if I am going out with a group of friends. I am very much a person who likes to have control over certain situations, but a lesson I even need to learn myself is that things almost always are not going to fully go to plan. Things are going to pop up that you are not anticipating. Planning is a great tool to have but there is always the risk of something going wrong. I am sure you can think of many times in your life that this has happened.

Overall I think the best practice is to realize that you can not fully control life. You can plan and plan and plan but there will always be that risk of something completely throwing a wrench in those plans. Life absolutely is unpredictable and we never really know what is going to happen next. I mean even as someone who does like to have a plan ahead of me, I feel like life would be incredibly boring if it always went 100% as expected every single day of my life. The important thing always is how we handle this. Do not panic or make any rash decisions. Life truly has a way of surprising us, and if a problem arises you just may be surprised at how easy the solution is.

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone has been doing well and pushing through the last couple of weeks. I know, right after I returned to my blog I ended up skipping another week. This was completely unintentional I simply had a lot going on an completely ran out of time to write last week. There are a lot of changes going on, one incredibly exciting, and I am doing my best to balance everything until that big change takes place. I know I have talked about change on this page before but I think it is an incredibly important topic to talk about. Our entire lives are about changing and we do a lot of it every single year of our lives. So let's dive into that a little.

I think it is safe to say the last year or so has been about nothing but change. Now, I said I am not going to dive too much into talking about the pandemic anymore on this page, and I stand by that, but I think it is an important point to bring up for this topic. I am not going to go into the politics of the pandemic, vaccine, anything along those lines but think of all the change that came as a result. For most of us our lives changed in a big way. Our routines I was preaching about pre-Covid were pretty much demolished overnight (depending on where you live) we could no longer go to work, to the gym, or even to visit our loved ones. Change was forced upon all of us in some way, shape, or form. Now here we are in 2021 and still pushing through. No things are not quite back to normal but we are still getting through each day. We are maybe used to new routines and adapting to the constant changes in others. The important part is that it did not fully break us.

Change is inevitable. It simply is a part of life. I feel like a broken record but I must say once again that I fully believe that everything in life happens for a reason. Yes, a lot of the time it is unclear what this reason is. Some things you deal with are incredibly painful and I am sure none of us can even fathom to think about a reason that happened, but I truly believe down the line we realize the reason for many things that have happened and grow to accept them to some level. Friends that leave our lives, usually are making room for someone that belongs there even more. Loved ones pass on, but that just means they are no longer in pain or suffering physically or mentally. You never have to be happy with negative changes in your life, but I personally am able to find a little peace with the situation once I realize why that change may have occurred.

This weekend (and the last few, which is why I have been so busy) I have been packing up my things to finally move out of my parents house. I am so incredibly excited to be able to take this next big step in my life, but in some ways it is sad packing up the bedroom I have spent almost 20 years of my life in. There are a lot of things I will miss about being here, but that does not mean I am not incredibly excited to have my very own space to call home. It is time and I am more than ready! Plus I am not moving far away or anything of the sorts. The way I look at it, I am very blessed to have parents that have been okay with me staying with them this long, and love me so much that it makes this such a bittersweet moment. I know some people are not as lucky and could not wait to fly the nest.... or were forced to fly it earlier than they were ready for. See what I mean about change though? It has the power to evoke such drastically different emotions, sometimes at the same time like in my case right now.

Overall I wanted to remind you all that change is inevitable and trying so hard to fight it does not typically do much. Once we learn to embrace it, it makes dealing with these changes much more manageable. Sure big emotions can come along with them, and it very important to deal with them, but aren't emotions what make us human? As I have said, everything happens for a reason. My big change was prolonged for a long time for many reasons, but I genuinely think that was all part of the unseen plan. I am thrilled with the way things worked out and I would not change a thing if I could. I hope you all learn to embrace these events as well!

I think it is safe to say that a lot of us are spending some of our precious time thinking about all of the "what ifs" right now. What if Covid never hit last year and we did not need to cancel an incredibly important event of my life that I had scheduled last year What if I had used the extra time at home to focus on my health. What if I could go back and do it all again? I think every single one of us thinks this way at some point or another. I myself and incredibly guilty of this. I talked last week about mental health and shared my experience with how some things had been taking a toll on me last week, and today I wanted to continue forward with a similar theme. What if we had done so many things differently last year?

Personally there are a lot of things I would have changed about the last year. In so many ways it felt like a wasted year. It was filled with the same mundane tasks day after day with very little to change it up since we were, and still are in some ways, very limited with how we could change things up. Now the entire time I tried my best to keep this page positive and share ways to stay positive throughout, but I only recently realized I was not actually taking my own advice through all of that time. For one I really struggled with my weight, making good food choices, and working out completely fell on the backburner. I am to this day struggling to find the motivation I had pre-Covid, but working on it. I can very easily say if I could go back I would have done everything in my power to make sure that motivation was never lost. Genuinely what was accomplished last year? On the surface, the answer to that question seems to be pretty much nothing. That is my very first gut reaction, but when I really sit to think about things, that is so far from the truth.

First and foremost, I did my part to not spread the virus to the ones I love, managed to not get sick myself, have the first vaccine in me, and overall managed to stay healthy. Now I am not here to get into the Covid debates, push a vaccine, or anything political of the sorts that came out of this pandemic, but overall my point is that I want you to remember that if you are feeling a similar way, lacking any pride in accomplishments from the past 12-14 months, I want you to first and foremost remember you are still here! You are still pushing through day to day life, even if just barely, and a year into this madness you are getting by. If you are like me and are disappointed in their weight and lack of progress over the past year, remember that your body has literally carried you through a year of a GLOBAL PANDEMIC and everything that came along with that for you personally.

Stepping away from the weight aspect of things, there are still plenty of other bright sides I can find. Anyone that knows me personally, and I believe I even mentioned here before, that I was fully set to move into my own place last spring. Covid obviously prevented that from happening due to restrictions with viewing apartments and a lack of availability, and just some personal reasons as well. This was a blessing in disguise. Firstly had I been at an apartment by myself at the start of lockdown in my state, and I would have literally no social interaction at all, I fear what my mental health would have looked liked at this point in the pandemic. Being quarantined with family, although sure we ticked each other off at times, was so much better than being stuck in an apartment by myself not being able to visit anyone. Had I moved out then I wouldn't be moving into the adorable place I am going to be moving into next month either. Truly that is something that worked out for the best.

Overall I want you all to remember to count your blessings. I think every last one of us is mourning something from the last year. Do your best to find the positive in that. As any of you that have read this page before knows, I am a firm believer in the everything happens for a reason philosophy. Perhaps this entire pandemic happened to teach us all as a human race some humility. If that is the case I think it is pretty clear to see which ones of us are lacking in that department. Maybe the past year was the universe setting all the dominos into place and once this is all behind us, the first will fall causing a chain reaction of blessings in every single one of our lives. Try your best to look on the bright side. Choose to have faith. Choose to forgive yourself for where you may have messed up last year, and remember to thank yourself for getting you to this very moment. Look back, but only for long enough to improve your path towards the future.

Happy Sunday everyone! Wow it really has been a while and it is almost to the point that sitting down to write on a Sunday afternoon feels a little odd to me. I have been gone from this page since late February. I announced that little hiatus on all of the social media pages I share more blog on, but I never actually explained I would be gone on here so I wanted to talk a little bit about my absence on today's post because I think it could really benefit someone who was struggling in the same way I was. I think a lot of us are experiencing what I am seeing referred to as "Covid burnout" and there have been a lot of struggles that people are experiencing with it all. Some far more extreme than others of course, so I just wanted to take some time to talk about what it was like for me. Before I dive in, however, I want to encourage anyone that may be suffering with sever anxiety or depression in general, but also because of the events of the world over the last year, to seek help the best way they know how. Trust yourself and listen to your gut instincts. If you think you need some professional help please seek it. You are not weak by doing so!

Towards the end of February I was finding myself in one of the biggest ruts I ever have been. Part of me felt guilty for that. Yes Covid is still very much around but it has not had the same impact on me as it had one someone who lost a loved one or was even sick themselves. I felt my mental health seriously suffering and I felt I had no room to feel that way. I have my job still, I have my health, I still have all of my loved ones, so what right did I have to feel anxious or depressed? The truth behind that is we all have our own struggles. Yes sometimes they are not as big as others but that does not mean they do not matter. If you are feeling a certain way, that feeling is valid. Never let someone downplay your struggles because they have their own. You are allowed to have a bad day. You are allowed to have a bad month, year, etc.

I was doing so well keeping it together because I was not allowing myself to truly grieve about the things I was sad about. Looking back over the span of a year I had lost a very good friend from work to cancer who I did not get to visit in the last months of her life. I still have not been able to meet my best friend's son or see her because of the pandemic, which was a mutual decision for everyone's safety and there are of course no hard feelings there but it still is sad too. My boss's wife, who I am very close with, has not been able to visit me and I have not seen her in person for over a year now. My sister was unable to walk the stage for her graduation ceremony and I was not able to be there cheering her on they way she cheered me on at mine 7 years ago. I had to cancel a really special trip with my long time best friends, one of which also had to postpone her wedding. I could probably keep going on and on about all the things big and small like this that I was grieving over, but not truly allowing myself to grieve. The past year has brought so much loss to so many people and I think a lot of us, like me, have been suppressing it.

So what did I do? Just like the last post on this page, I put me first. This page was started to feel like more of a chore since my heart wasn't in it, so I decided to take a much needed break. I would rather take the time off than just keep posting posts that my heart wasn't in at all. I took a few days off of work last month as well just for mental health days. Luckily, as I have many times before said, my bosses are really cool about my days off so they were more than happy to approve those days off because they both know how overwhelmed with work I was becoming as well. I found myself a new hobby as well which I highly recommend. On one of those days off I went to the craft store for a few supplies and a set of watercolor paints caught my eye. It was on sale for $7 so I grabbed it and I have been watercolor painting every single day since then. I am no Van Gogh yet, but I think my skills are already improving with practice. But regardless if I am improving or not the most important thing is that I am doing it for me. No deadlines or special requests. Just painting. I have very much been putting me first and I already feel so much better.
Here is one of the paintings I have done
as I am learning.

With improvements comes additional things to improve on. I will be honest, my gym schedule (or lack thereof) has been an absolute mess. I am struggling to find the motivation to keep going with my workouts and not making the best food choices, but I am doing my best to set myself up to get back on track. I would love to do more reading again and write more poetry, because that too was suffering while I was feeling down. My biggest piece of advice to you is to also recognize these things and seek help when you need it. If you need a few mental health days take them. I know not all bosses are as chill as mine but you are entitled to your paid time off so you are allowed to use them. I would highly suggest a no pressure hobby like I found in watercolor painting too. Something you just do for you. You don't even have to be any good at it as long as you enjoy it. Most importantly, however, is that if you need help seek it. I cannot stress that enough.

Thank you so very much for sticking around for this post all about me, but I felt it was necessary in my return. I am looking forward to getting right back to my same routine starting now.

Happy Sunday Everyone! I want to start off by asking anyone reading this... how are you doing? You can answer this in your head, leave a comment telling me, or anything you want as long as you take a moment to think about how you are actually doing. I am not sure how other countries and cultures, or even other parts of the US respond to "how are you?" but I know where I am it is pretty common to just say "good, how are you?" right back. It is essentially just a standard way of greeting someone. If you are having a great day, horrible day, overall just feeling any way at all you most likely still respond with "good, how are you?" as if it is just a casual greeting. I want you to actually think about it for a moment and think about where you are both mentally and physically at the moment before we move on to the topic for today.

I have been struggling lately. I might sound like a broken record here, and I know I talked about a similar topic very recently but this is what is on my mind this week, and I always try to stick to writing about just that. We all make New Year goals and challenges for ourselves, well here we are almost 2 full months into 2021 and where are you with those goals? I saw a video online a few days ago that asked the viewer just that, and it hit me pretty hard. Out of everyone I know, everyone seems to be struggling in some way right now. I want you to know, again, that that is okay. It is a perfectly valid human emotion and response to stress and trauma. The past 12 months have been something none of us have seen in our lifetime. A pandemic that has killed almost 2.5 million people worldwide, an absolutely ridiculous seemingly never-ending election in the US, an attack on one of our nations historic buildings, I could go on and on but I don't need to. Some people are able to deal with the news in a positive way while others not as much. It is completely understandable to be struggling right now!

Now of course I am all about positivity, it is right in the name of my page, but as anyone that has read my past entries also knows that I encourage everyone to also deal with their negative emotions and experiences as well. Toxic positivity is a real thing, and I am not about that at all. We are humans capable of feeling a vast array of emotions and ignoring any of them is not healthy. So let me get to my point here. Yesterday I had my first training session at the gym in a few weeks. In between sets we always chat a little bit. Sometimes about things in our lives, and others relating to the gym or working out of course. I got to mentioning how my motivation is at an all time low right now and he asked me to think about why that was. The truth is I am emotionally just burnt out. Work has been busy and somewhat stressful, the things on the news lately has been getting to me, I have been worrying so much about other people I, once again, am not making myself a priority. I like to think I have a good heart, but sometimes in some ways that comes at my own expense. It is okay to take some time for you. It is okay to struggle. The best piece of advice I can give is one I am also giving to myself: Keep trying to make yourself a priority.

Think of it as how they ask you to put your oxygen mask on in a plane, before you go helping others with theirs. I know this analogy is so overused but it fits. If you are neglecting yourself a resource needed to calm down and survive, you won't be able to help as many people. If you pass out, you are not helping anyone. If you put the oxygen on first you then are taking care of you so that you can then extend that and help others. If you are a mother this probably rings so true. I do not have any children yet, but I see how they can sometimes make themselves the lowest priority on their list. Feed the kids, get the laundry done, get the kids bathed and ready for bed, and by the time that happens they are exhausted and move along to do it all again in the morning. Of course some things can't be put off, but if you take some time to mentally and physically care for yourself, you'll be even more successful the next day. This goes for every last one of us.

I need to make the gym a priority again. I need to get better at meal planning again. I need to take more time to relax, and not let the stress of the work day pile up so by the time 5:30pm hits I have no interest in going to the gym. I need to turn off the news sometimes and watch something mindless and fun. A Harry Potter movie marathon, start a new fiction book, write some poetry or journal, dance around in my bedroom in my pjs, bake a loaf of bread because I want to and not for a specific meal, do some yoga or even a nice reflection meditation, go to the gym and get back to a place where I enjoy it and it doesn't feel like a chore again. I know all of these things are things that I enjoy that I need to make more time for rather than just working and eating and sleeping. I need to push them to the top of the list and make time for them and not feel guilty or that I should be doing something more productive. If any of this is sounding familiar, it sounds like you also need to make yourself a priority. Take some time for you. Take some time to recover from the crazy year we have all been living in together. Take some time to put you first.

Happy Sunday everyone and a very Happy Valentine's Day to you all as well. I hope you are all celebrating if you are lucky enough to have a valentine, but if you don't that is perfectly okay too. Some have someone special with them today, some of us have a special someone that can't be with them today, and some don't have one at all but you know what? That is perfectly okay too because you can be your very own valentine in that case! Today is all about love and showing those around us that we care. Traditionally that means a lover, but it doesn't need to only mean that! I want to talk today about love, because what better day to revisit that topic than Valentine's Day?

I am going to start off, as I am sure you are all expecting me to, by saying if you are in fact celebrating in person with your valentine this year make sure you are smart and safe. We are still in a global pandemic here so you do not want to end up sick in a couple of weeks just because you decided the holiday was worth ignoring restrictions and safety guidelines, make sure you make safe plans! Now, love is not a new topic for my page here. I have always said love is something that the world always is in need of more of. Love comes in all shapes and forms. Today is traditionally about love between lovers, but it there is no rule at all to say it has to be. My family has always exchanged little gifts and cards on holidays, I love buying small gifts for my niece and nephew and for my bosses' kids at work, and my one boss's wife always send in a little gift for me as well. Of course Valentine's Day is not about gifts necessarily, but it is about showing someone in your life that means something to you that you care.

Valentine's Day, however, is not the only day you can do this either. Every single day we have the option to show the ones we love that we care. Cook dinner for your spouse on a night they may not want to, surprise them with their favorite movie and snack for a random at home date night one night. There are so many things you can do to show someone you care about them on the other 364 days of the week. Love between two soulmates is a very beautiful thing and that should be celebrated every day of the week not just on a commercial holiday. Sure candy hearts, heart shaped boxes of chocolates, cute cards, and fuzzy teddy bears are all fun and exciting to exchange, but there are so many ways to show you care without those things.

Now as I mentioned earlier, a lover is not the only type of love that needs to be celebrated. Family members, close friends, and even yourself are all other really good sources of love that should be celebrated. There is no rule that you shouldn't wish your friend a Happy Valentine's Day or get your mom a box of chocolates. Heck there is also no rule that says you shouldn't buy yourself some candy or flowers for Valentine's day. Love really is all around us even if so many do their best to try and tear it down. The world will never be a bad place because there is more love in it. The world will never suffer because there is more love in it. Love will always set us free, especially with the love we find within ourselves. As soon as we let love in, misery has no place anymore. If we love ourselves and each other everything gets a little brighter and the smog filled skies will start to dissipate. Choose love every single day.

Overall I want you all to remember just how special love is in your life. Maybe you are single and bitter because it is Valentine's Day. Trust me I have had my fair share of bitter Valentine's Days that I rolled my eyes at any couple I saw and overall just wanted the reminder of being single to be over with. You should never envy others that have found love for there is plenty of it still needed in the world. Your person might be closer than you know it. Someone else's happiness doe not mean that you will never find your own. Smile because they found love, smile because you also have love in your life, and smile knowing that one day that also will be you. The world is always better with more love in it, and not just on Valentine's Day!

Happy Sunday all! Wow I honestly cannot believe yet another week has passed us by. I am sitting here and my meal prep is done, laundry is going to be going in the washer soon, and a loaf of bread is in the oven. As I have said so many times before in the past, preparing for the week ahead, especially with food, is so very important. It is a lot easier to stick to your meal plan when everything is ready to go. I planned on doing this post a few weeks ago, but when all the craziness ensued in the US I just did not have it in me to write a post that seemed so unimportant in comparison, but it is about time for something lighter today! Today I want to do a review on a meal kit delivery service, Green Chef.

I have to start this review with a shoutout to Danielle who gave me the code in order to get these kits for completely free which was great. It gave me the ability to try out a kit I might not otherwise and doubled as an idea for a new review for my blog, so thanks Danielle! If you are not sure what Green Chef is, it is a meal kit delivery service. You pick the number of meals, servings, and select what meals you want out of a good number of new ones each week. Basically they ship everything to you and it is all pre-portioned and put together for you with an easy recipe. The biggest thing these kits do is eliminate your trip to the grocery store, or at least it cuts it in half. Most of the kits have a little prep work to do before cooking, but nothing excessive, and everything is portioned out exactly. I am sure you have seen a million of these kits before, it is similar to all of those. Pictured in this paragraph is the ingredients for the taco bowl I ordered. everything is portioned out, and most of it was already chopped and ready to go. Every kit comes just like this.

So what are some perks with Green Fresh? As I mentioned before everything comes portioned and a lot of the prep is done for you already when you get in. Pictured here was a salmon with kale, beets, and a nice lemon caper sauce on top. In that whole kit the only real prep work I had to do was to chop the kale and capers, everything else was chopped and ready to go. On a long day after work and especially if I go to the gym the last thing I want to do is make a dinner that is a million steps. I am usually tired and hungry at that point so the quicker the better. A lot of the time that means I grab something already made, or I make something really simple like a pan fried piece of fish and microwavable steamed vegetables. Those are fine choices sure, but being able to have a meal like this with just as much effort is awesome on a busy week night! I honestly loved having some variety during the week because I have been incredibly bored with food lately eating the same old things.

A weekly kit sent right to your door every week with pre portioned meals prepped for you to cook, so what are the cons? Well I would say overall it was a great experience. One place people may have an issue with is the price in my opinion. Depending on your financial situation spending that much money may just be out of your budget. The kit I ordered was 4 meals, each for 2 servings and that would cost around $105 per week. Honestly that is around how much I spend on groceries for the entire week and that includes food for all 3 meals and snacks of the week. So overall it is a bit more expensive than I am used to. I can see that being a problem for some people, me included when my expenses go up in a couple of months. Honestly though that is really the only negative thing I have to say. Out of all the recipes I tried I liked every single one of them and I tried brand new thing I have never tried before. For example in this picture is B
arramundi fish with a mango salsa, lime slaw, and carrot fries. I had never heard of this kind of fish before and I ended up loving it! Especially paired with that bright citrussy slaw and salsa.

Overall I loved this meal kit! It was great to just be able to pull the kit from the fridge, do a bit of prep, and have dinner ready after 30 minutes. The selection was great as well. From burgers to pasta to vegetarian dishes. I am sure out of all the options they give you every week you will be able to find something that caters to you and your family as well. The meals have a great variety, usually healthy options as well. Sure one week I got a pork burger recipe (which I pictured here) but it only called for a little oil on the potato wedges and in the pan the burger was fried in, and a little cheese was on the burger. Still a much better option than a greasy fast food combo meal I am sure! Overall my experience with Green Chef has been a very positive one and I have been loving the recipes I have tried. Great food, fast, easy, and it eliminates time at the grocery store, I say that is a great experience!

Happy Sunday all! I am back after taking a little break last week. With so much uncertainty in the air I was finding it really hard to focus on writing a post, so I figured instead of forcing it I would just take the week off to recharge and get back to it this week. I have a review coming up that I was going to do this week, but I am going to push it off one more week because I felt this topic is an important one, and I write a poem recently that would be perfect to end this with. I broke with my norms last post and talked about American politics, which is something I absolutely never do, and I do not regret that. Unless something huge happens in the future again I probably will not do that again. We all have differing views and opinions, and I have always wanted to keep this blog a neutral space for everyone. No matter what your views on anything are, I think one thing we all have in common is hope.

Now I am sure I have talked about hope on this page many times before. Hope and love in a lot of ways go hand in hand, and I know I am always preaching how important it is to have love in our lives. Hope and love both make the world the place we want it to be. Without either of those things, imagine how scary, dark, and cold the world would be. Hope keeps us going. If you did not have any hope within yourself at all you truly would never work towards any goal in your life at all. If you are not hopeful for those new beginnings and end results of anything you put your mind to, why would you even be working to achieve them at all? Hope is genuinely so important to keep in your hearts. Hope pulls us through the darkest of times, even if we are not even aware that it is lurking in our hearts. Hope is always there waiting to be called upon.

I want you to take a moment and think about what a world without any hope at all might look like. If it wasn't for hope any of the previous big wars in history may have been fought in vain. If there was no hope in those times they very likely could have ended human civilization as we have come to know it. You and I may never have been brought into this world. A very striking example would be Anne Frank. I think we all know her story, she was in hiding from the Nazis during the Holocaust and kept he now famous diary documenting this time. Despite their conditions and circumstances her diary was full of messages of hope. Her story unfortunately came to a horrible end, despite that hope, but her message of hope was not lost on the rest of the world. She lives on through that message. She lives on because of her hope. Even someone living through one of the darkest times of history had hope in her heart.

I know times get hard for everyone. As I said I took last week off because my anxiety was at an all time high from everything going on and the worry of things to come. It is only human to worry sometimes. Even in those times, however, hope is there waiting for us to see it. Even when we want to ignore it and sulk in our sorrows. Even when we just want to be angry at the world. Even when the storm clouds just do not want to dissipate. It is still there lying dormant until the spark comes to ignite it. All of this hope in my heart inspired me to write a poem on the topic yesterday, and I figured it would be nice to share here too:

Hope Will Always Pull Us Through

Rich cream splashed into black coffee,
one single splash breaking that seal
saturating the obsidian.

Spring tulips sleeping through the winter
dormant and waiting for the first sunshine
to awaken the new year’s blossoms.

Deep, vast night sky of dark, deep navy.
A single star appears, then transforms
into a sky full of stars.

Hope always lurks,
no matter how dark the sky,
no matter how cold the winter,
no matter how bitter the coffee.
Hope is waiting to rise up.

Light will always outshine darkness.
Good will always overcome evil.
Hope will always pull us through.

When you are scared and feeling alone, always remember that hope will always pull you through. No one was ever hurt or damaged because they had hope. Sure sometimes things do not work out the way you hoped they would, but in the end hope is what gets us through those times. Stay hopeful that things will work out in the end just the way they are supposed to, because they will. It is so incredibly cliché but I genuinely believe that everything happens for a reason, and hope is what pushed us through to find out just what that reason is, especially in the times where there is pain and confusion. Maybe things did not work out how you wanted. Maybe life is just not how you imagined it would be at this moment. Hope will keep us fighting to get to the ultimate destination in our hearts.

I have tried to sit down and write my blog a few times now and am having a hard time focusing. I am sure I am not alone in that. This past week as pretty much everyone in the world knows was a very dark one for the United States. I try to keep politics off of my page as I believe this is a space for everyone, that everyone can use positivity in their lives no matter their views, and overall I like to think of this page as a place to escape rather than be reminded of the news. I can't do that this week though. I had a review of a meal service planned for this week but it just is not in me to sit and pretend that I am mentally okay after the events that took place this week and talk about something that is pretty meaningless in comparison. I am going to do what I always do on this page and discuss, while also shedding a positive light.

Before anyone tries to defend or fight against me on what I am about to say I want to tell you to save your breath. The events that took place this week were vile and disgusting. Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Liberal, etc. No matter what your views on things are, I think any rational and sane person can agree on that. This is no longer about opposing views. This is no longer a fight between conservative and liberal. What we saw Wednesday in this country was an act of pure hatred and selfishness. It was not about anyone's rights. It was not about anyone's finances. It was not a statement or a protest. It was an attempted coup. There is no sugarcoating that at all. Everyone has the right to be upset with the outcome of the election, but that was not just one step too far, it was twenty, and it was, and continues to be, encouraged by someone who is supposed to be leading this country. There is absolutely no defending that.

Now enough about it, quite frankly I am sick of even thinking about it and worrying about what else the future is holding. My point in writing this today is to tell you that is is okay to be not okay. It is okay to be scared and worried. It is okay if you, like myself, sat and watched the news when these events were unfolding and were literally shaking in fear with a pit in your stomach. I know that if you are a parent with small kids you need to act strong in front of them so they are not fearful, but it is also okay for you to be upset or scared. You are not considered weak or less than for letting something so horrible and big occurring filling you with fear.

My best advice to give my readers is to take care of your mental health. I have been saying this for months now during the pandemic, but this is something that was like a giant explosion that occurred, rather than a small wound festering like the pandemic. With the pandemic we could gradually get used to things, where this happened all at once. If the news is upsetting you, turn it off and read a fantasy book. Take a break from the world and make yourself a cup of coffee or tea and drink it looking out of your window at nature. Appreciate the beauty of the world as you do because even when things get dark, it is still there. Drink your water! Do a workout. Play a video game, preferably one without violence, to further distract yourself. Do whatever you need to do to distract yourself from everything and move through life as best you can.

Again I want you all to know it is okay to not be okay. The past year was physically and mentally exhausting and of course 2021 was not to be outdone. If you live in this country it is perfectly understandable to be scared and worried. I am myself as I am sure this is not over. I am fearful for what could happen in the next few weeks, and that is a natural human reaction. You are only human and none of us are strong all of the time. Keep looking forward, even if what is ahead seems so completely uncertain, and if you need to take a break to sit on an old tree stump along the path, that is okay too.

Happy 2021 all! It seemed like the longest and shortest year all rolled into one, but we made it! Now as I said last week, just because it is a new year on paper, that does not mean that certain things about 2020 just go away. Humanity as a whole is still fighting against some things that, although there is an end in sight that does not mean that we let our guard down and pretend life is completely normal again. But hey, I am not here to harp on that bad aspects of 2020, I am here to put a positive spin on 2021. Now last week a did talk all about 2021looking towards the new year in a positive way, and I wanted to elaborate on that a bit further and talk all about planning on the new year.

Before I move completely on to plans for the new year I do want to talk just a bit more about 2020. So many of us had a rough year in all different aspects, but I want to focus a little more on the health aspect of things. Some people really thrived with eating right and exercising during quarantine, but I know so many more that had the opposite issues. Maybe you did not exercise hardly at all because you struggled with the gyms being closed and overall just did not do very well with working out from home. I know many people did a lot more snacking and ordered a lot more takeout while they were at home. These kinds of habits very obviously resulted in weight gain for a lot of us. In my opinion the very first step you should take in 2021 is to forgive yourself for that. If you gained weight, lost muscle, or overall just lost your routine, your body still got you through an incredibly hard year. Your body helped you push through even if you didn't treat it quite right. Just be thankful you are still here and look forward, not back.

Planning is the most important part of making changes in your life. I have preached this so many times in this blog, but with falling out of habits in the previous year I think it is important to revisit it. I too need the reminder. So what is the most important reason you might have to plan ahead? Well when we plan our meals and do as much prep as possible, it ensures there are plenty of healthy options available to us so our busy lives are not an excuse to reach for the easy and more caloric option. Look I get it, it is so much easier to just DoorDash for sushi and udon noodles than it is to cook a meal with whole foods on a week night. This is the exact reason why it is important to have a good number of healthy options ready for you to grab and eat, or even if things are planned out and require as little cooking and prepping as possible on the night you are going to eat them. The same goes with your workouts. If you plan your week out ahead of time that eliminates the possibility of blowing your workout out because you are unsure what to do once you get there.

I spent my entire Sunday doing a good amount of prep for next week. I threw together some Asian chicken salads for my lunches next week, mixed together some protein energy balls to eat as a quick snack before I go to the gym (you need to be careful with those though. Only one or two is all you need) I made up a nice veggie and potato hash for breakfasts I can just heat up in the air fryer, and I even tried out one of those meal services for my dinners this week thanks to Danielle who gave me a code for a free box! I put pictures of all of these things throughout my blog just for some inspiration to any readers that may be struggling. The most important part of all of this is to make sure you are ready for the week ahead as much as possible. If you can't afford a meal service maybe plan dinners and do as much prep work as possible. Chop all your veggies, marinate your proteins, mix up any sauces, etc. anything that you can do ahead of time do it! Utilize your slow cooker or instant pot or air fryer if you have one. Just do everything you can to make life a little easier for you so you are less likely to take an easier route.

Overall my best advice to you and myself is to make sure you are as ready as possible for every week ahead of you. Get your gum bag packed as much as possible. Make sure you have socks, hand sanitizer, and face masks if your state requires them or you make the choice to wear one. No need to not be able to workout because you forgot something so small. As I have said make sure your meals are as planned out and prepped as possible to make things a lot easier on yourself during the week. The more you set yourself up for success the more likely you will be to achieve it. Keep up with these things until they become habits, or in my case until they become habits again. So many of us coped with the dumpster fire that was 2020 by falling out of a lot of our routines and good habits, now is the time to stop making excuses and get back to it!

Happy last Sunday of 2020 everyone! This is the last post I will share with any readers that come along to my page here of this year, and I wanted to keep the tradition alive and take this last post to reflect on the year and talk a little about looking towards 2021 and what that means to me. I think it is safe to say that this year had plenty of ups and downs, more downs than most would like to admit, so looking back is going to be interesting to say the least. As always I want to put a positive spin on things, however, and talk about what we can look forward to in 2021.

2020 in so many ways seemed like the gift that kept on giving... but by gift I mean that one gift you would like to forget about yet it keeps on getting worse. Think about all we have been through in just the past 366 days (because remember people this was a leap year too!) We have been through a global pandemic that has killed millions of people and infected millions more. We have been through a civil rights movement that is still going but more notably sparked protests all over the world, not just in America, back in May/June. America also had a record breaking election, that in some ways still seems to be never-ending. We spent a lot of the year away from the ones we love because of this pandemic to ensure our and their safety. Not even to mention that this pandemic has brought out the very best and the very worst in people all over. We saw selfless acts all over the place during those first few months of the pandemic. Neighbors helped each other out, all while others acted incredibly selfishly. But I am not here to get into politics or preach about right and wrong. My point is that we all as a human race have been through so much this past year and no matter what we did and how we handled it, we deserve to celebrate that we have made it this far.

So what did 2020 look like for me? Well if you follow this blog at all I have been sharing my thoughts every week as always, but lets talk about the highlights a bit. I have been taking this pandemic very seriously along with my parents so we did not see anyone for months. I had my very first piece of published work come out in March, and have since been published in an online poetry magazine. I am grateful to have kept my job throughout this entire pandemic and that my financial situation did not really change at all, I know many were not so lucky. I drank a lot of cold brew coffee, did a number of workouts from home and realized just how much I love the gym, read a lot more than I have since college, did A LOT of baking and started to genuinely enjoy baking fresh bread like so many others during quarantine. Sadly in late October we had to put our sweet pup Tobie down, but on the very same day the world gained another sweet soul when my best friend had her baby. This year was full of so many ups and downs and it is pretty crazy to look back and realize that all of this was in the span of the year.

So what about 2021? Contrary to what it seems a lot of people think, the pandemic does not just disappear at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day. That does not mean, however, that things will not look better and that we won't move on and forward. I think a lot of people, myself included, gained some weight this year. I know it is so very stereotypical but with the new year approaching it is a good idea to work on that again. Look, a few weeks ago I decided to just call this year a wash and just focus again in January. No that does not mean I stopped working out completely or went totally crazy during the holidays, but overall I just lost focus since it was such a crazy year. In my opinion that is okay but I am going to do my very best and really focus on the gym and nutrition again in 2021. Do your best to forgive yourself for anything you may have been lacking with this year and just work on trying again in the future. I plan to focus on my health again and spend more time on things I love to do. I plan on making myself a priority when this past year as I have mentioned I was focusing more on other people.

The best thing we can do while reflecting on this past year is look back and applaud ourselves for getting through it. No matter how much you lost this year, you got through it and that means you are strong. We skipped family gatherings, we said goodbye, or in some cases were unable to say goodbye, to ones we lost, our mental health went on a serious rollercoaster, along with our physical health from being stuck inside all day. None of that goes without acknowledgement. Realize that you would not be reading this right now if you did not get through it. Realize that you are strong. Realize that things will get better but only if you keep looking and walking forward. Thank yourself for getting you through this year. Treat yourself with kindness, and lets all work on loving ourselves even more in the coming year. Let's make it a great one, as best as we can! Happy New Year to all of you!

Well the holidays are officially here. This will be my last post before Christmas day so I wanted to do something in honor of that this week. All the holidays are all about traditions. We all have them to some degree, even if they have faded through the years. This year especially though a lot of our traditions had to be put on hold (or should have because of the pandemic but I am not here to give a lecture). I wanted to talk a little about that today. There are so many ways it can still feel like Christmas even if things are a little different this year. There are so many things we can still do, and new things we can do this year, in order to truly keep the Christmas Spirit alive.

Let's start with the traditions that do not need to change this year. My family in particular has so many different holiday traditions that we have kept going through all of the years, but we also like to make new ones from time to time as well. Of course Covid did not change the fact that we put up our pretty tree, decorated it with all the ornaments we have collected over the years, and that we light it every night. We still sent Christmas cards, we still put up all kinds of decorations and just made our living room look like the North Pole. All of that did not need to change at all. My mom and I have watched all kinds of Christmas movies and specials on TV just like we do every year, and we are both looking forward to watching "White Christmas" together on Christmas Eve like we do every single year. So many traditions just like these did not need to change at all, which keeps the Christmas spirit alive.

What about traditions that needed to be revised a little? We still baked Christmas cookies this year, but not quite as many as we usually do. We skipped the cut out cookies since Kristin, Gina, and Desiree couldn't come over to help decorate. We of course won't be exchanging cookies as much this year, so we simply cut back, but I still had a lot of fun in my new Christmas apron baking! I know a lot of families won't be together this year on the holiday, but I know many of them are making due with what they can. My extended family is planning a virtual holiday, and I am sure many are doing the same. Just because you can't be with someone physically this year does not mean you can't see them! There are so many ways you can just tweak your usual traditions around in order to make them work this year, and unless your family gathering is small, I highly suggest you do!

Now what about the things we simply cannot do this year? A great example for me would be my office Christmas party. I look forward to it every year but there was of course no way to make that possible this year since my office is pretty big. All the more reason to look forward to next year's party right? Some traditions just cannot happen this year sadly, but that doesn't mean you can't still do something in its place! Instead of going to an event you can take a drive with your family to look at Christmas lights. Sure we can't have a big party, but why not instead take the night that party would have been and have a Christmas movie night with your family. Pop some popcorn, make some hot chocolate, and cozy up together in your pajamas. There are plenty of new traditions we can all make this year in place of the old ones we simply would not be safe doing this year. I promise you it will be worth it in the end if it means keeping everyone you love safe.

I want to end this on a positive note because that is just what I do. Instead of dwelling on the traditions we can't do this year, we should instead be grateful we are still on this earth to celebrate Christmas. This time of year is all about giving and goodwill towards all. Instead of complaining about what you cannot do why not use that energy to make the holiday brighter for someone else. I said all this last week, but I just think it is so important to say. It is not too late to donate to a good cause, buy a toy for a child in an underprivileged family, donate food to a food bank, etc. There are so many ways to celebrate the season of giving not just this year but every year. With the holiday rush we all at times become blinded by the commercial aspects of Christmas, but just remember to think of the true intent of this holiday, giving. Even if you do not have a traditional holiday, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas if you celebrate, and I will see you next week to wrap up this stressful year!
